2022 Bründlmayer, Riesling "Ried Zöbinger Heiligenstein" 1 ÖTW

This isn't just a bottle of Riesling; it is an encounter with one of the most significant geological monuments in wine. For decades, the Bründlmayer estate has served as the "North Star" of Austria's Kamptal district. Under the stewardship of Willi Bründlmayer, the estate’s quality remains untouchable, producing "collector-grade" dry Rieslings that have earned soaring 94-96 point accolades from Vinous, Wine Advocate, and James Suckling.

The magic of the Heiligenstein site is rooted in 270 million years of history. A singular anomaly of Permian desert sandstone flecked with volcanic inclusions, this vineyard is a prehistoric time capsule. The vines thrive on a steep gradient where warm winds meet cooling gusts from the Waldviertel forest, a diurnal shift that preserves crystalline acidity and creates an almost architectural phenolic density. Through organic farming and the unique Lyra trellis system, Bründlmayer coaxes a sun-kissed, pure transmission of this ancient rock into every bottle.

Tasting the 2022 Heiligenstein is like standing on a sun-drenched terrace after a summer rain. Precise aromatics of kaffir lime and green orchard fruit are wrapped in a smoky veil of wet flint and white tea. On the palate, the wine moves with the grace of a champion athlete—lithe and muscular, delivering a concentrated core of nectarine and pink grapefruit reined in by a vibrating, stony nerve. With the structural authority of a Grand Cru Burgundy and a purity of fruit unique to the Kamptal, this is a wine of prehistoric power that belongs in every serious cellar.

Zum Wohl!

Critical Acclaim:

Vinous Wine Media Logo

96 Points, Vinous Media:

“The 2022 Riesling Heiligenstein is from core parcels of the site, where cool Waldviertel air meets the warm Pannonian influence. This 2022 vintage is the first where the Lyra- and Guyot-trained vines were co-harvested and co-fermented. The nose has a subtle note of cypress, with a touch of smokiness and a suspicion of green citrus peel. The palate adds a riper notion of juicy white peach, but remains framed with tingling citrus. Both elements together result in immense juiciness, showing a svelte exuberance that, for now, skips over stony minerality, which will take time to reveal itself. This is beautiful, taut, long and serene.”

James Suckling Wine Logo

94 Points, James Suckling:

“Enticingly nose with complex aromas of fresh garden flowers and dried flowers, also dried and “fresh pear. Racy and driving with an exciting cassis freshness on the very focused palate. Very stony finish. From organically grown grapes.”

Robert Parker Wine Advocate Logo

94 Points, Wine Advocate:

“The 2022 Riesling Ried Heiligenstein 1ÖTW shows notes of ripe Riesling seeds reminiscent of mocha on the dense, delicately creamy and spicy, remarkably complex and stony bouquet. Green but juicy on the palate, again with notes of roasted mocha beans, this Heiligenstein is very fine, elegant, uniquely purist in style, pleasantly firm and intensely saline, even if it was still little approachable in the fall. It pulls together well on the finish. This is very promising.”
