2022 Anza,(Diego Magaña) Rioja "Carramonte"

When Luis Gutiérrez of The Wine Advocate awarded the 2022 Anza "Carramonte" a stellar 96-point review, he confirmed what the industry’s inner circle already knew: Diego Magaña is redefining the region. This is the "New Rioja," a movement led by mavericks who are abandoning the rigid Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva hierarchy to focus on the raw energy of the soil. We are thrilled to offer our loyal Rioja fans the best price in the nation on this VIP selection when you opt into a 3-bottle buy-in or more. This is a rare opportunity to secure a high-tone, mineral-chiseled masterpiece from one of Spain’s most exciting young talents.

Named after a specific, singular site, Carramonte is a field blend that revives the traditional "old way" of Rioja winemaking. Long before the region was defined by aging requirements in the cellar, wines were honest expressions of a single vineyard where various grapes were grown and harvested together. Sourced from Magaña’s oldest bushvines—some between 75 and 90 years old—planted in pure white limestone, these "gardens" are worked entirely by horse. This small-production project prioritizes the nervy, high-altitude tension of the Rioja Alavesa district over the heavy oak influence of the past.

The true magic of this bottling lies in its unique terroir; the limestone-rich soils of the site impart a level of transparency and verticality rarely seen in the region. This isn't a broad or heavy wine; rather, it moves with stunning precision and a chiseled, mineral backbone. While the core is Tempranillo, the wine’s complexity is bolstered by a 10-12% inclusion of white varieties Viura and Malvasía Riojana, providing an incredible lift and focused acidity. For the serious collector, this is a vital chance to experience the future of Rioja by returning to its most authentic, site-specific roots.

¡Viva España!

96 Points, Wine Advocate:

"As soon as I was pouring, I knew the 2022 Carramonte was going to be my favorite, because of the bright color and the bright and elegant aromas. It was produced with the fruit from old vines in Elvillar (70 years old) and Laguardia (ungrafted 90-year-old vines) and another one in Laguardia planted 50 years ago and a little Garnacha from Badar n, micro-plots with field blends of grapes: Tempranillo, Graciano, Garnacha and Viura. It's serious and balanced and does not transmit any heat at all, coming through as fresh and fine-boned, with very elegant tannins, precision and freshness, terribly precise and mineral. It doesn't feel like a 2022 at all. Like most reds, it matured in used 500-liter oak barrels.
