2021 Zorzal, Tupungato Valley Malbec "Terroir Unico"
This is not your one-dimensional, overripe Argentine Malbec!
Zorzal's ''Terroir Unico" is a site-specific, 100% Malbec from the Gualtallary subregion of the Uco Valley at approximately 4800 feet above sea level. The Michelini brothers emphasize a light hand in the winemaking so the fruit and terroir can be a transparent experience in the glass. The estate's low-yielding Malbec vines are grown in a diverse site that includes sand, stones, and granitic limestone. The result is a wine that exhibits restraint and mineral drive. The fruit is picked a few weeks earlier than their neighbors to retain freshness and acidity.
The 2021 exhibits a gorgeous black and blue hue in the glass suggesting a massive wine. Upon taste, the wine has a refreshing mineral cut to counterpoint the blueberry, black plum, and baker's chocolate notes on the mid-palate. Tertiary notes of cinnamon, baking spices, and savory herbs adds to the allure.Silky and well-integrated tannins put an exclamation point on this affordable package. Not many regions in the world can pull off a wine with impeccable purity and balance at this price point. ¡Viva Argentina!
