2021 Tiziano Mazzoni, Ghemme dei Mazzoni

Ghemme sits in the historic heart of Alto Piemonte, once the commercial engine of Piedmontese wine long before Barolo and Barbaresco captured global attention. In this cool, glacially influenced corner along the Sesia River, Nebbiolo (locally called Spanna) takes on a slightly gentler, more finely etched personality: bright red fruit, lifted florals, keen acidity, and taut but more filigreed tannins. The DOCG of Ghemme itself is tiny—fewer than 100 hectares and roughly 20 active producers—yet it carries centuries of viticultural tradition and a track record for producing long‑lived, aromatic Nebbiolo that trades brute force for finesse. Within this context, the single‑vineyard “Ghemme dei Mazzoni” harnesses the appellation’s clay‑ and moraine‑rich soils, alpine air, and long growing season to deliver depth without heaviness and real cellar potential without the sticker shock of more famous appellations.

Tiziano Mazzoni is emblematic of Alto Piemonte’s revival: a modern “back‑to‑the‑lander” who returned to his ancestral home of Cavaglio d’Agogna in 1999 to reclaim vineyards largely abandoned after post‑war industrialization. At about 4.5 hectares and ~1,200 cases annually, his is a truly artisanal estate, farmed organically and vinified in the spirit of his favorite traditional Barolos—long macerations, larger neutral oak, and an unwavering commitment to 100% Nebbiolo even where blending is allowed. “Dei Mazzoni” comes from the first parcel he acquired, with destemmed fruit, native fermentations in stainless steel, ~22 months in 15‑hL French oak casks, and unfined, unfiltered bottling followed by extended bottle aging. In the glass, it shows deep garnet with pink‑orange highlights and a spectrum of red cherry, plum, rose petal, blood orange, pink peppercorn, tobacco, black tea, and wild herbs. Medium‑bodied, tightly structured, and lower in alcohol than many Barolo examples, it marries Alto Piemonte’s clarity and cut with a Burgundian sense of delicacy—deceptively graceful now, and poised to evolve beautifully through 2030.

Why You’ll Love It

  • This is a distinctive Alto Piemonte Nebbiolo that tall stands on its own merits, (not as “Barolo at a discount") offering red‑fruited elegance, floral lift, and mineral precision.

  • Single‑vineyard, low‑intervention, 100% Nebbiolo from a tiny, organically farmed estate, delivering authenticity and terroir transparency in every glass.

  • Serious age-worthiness and complexity at a price that remains dramatically below comparable Barolo/Barbaresco, making it a smart, long‑horizon cellar play.

How To Serve It

  • Decant 30 minutes before serving and pour at about 60–65°F in Burgundy stems to highlight its aromatic range and finely grained tannins.

  • Pair with richly flavored but not heavy dishes—think truffle‑stuffed roast chicken, game birds, mushroom pastas, or herb‑roasted pork.

  • Enjoy now for its vibrancy and detail, but set a few bottles aside; properly stored, it should drink beautifully through at least 2030.
