The 2021 Tenuta di Valgiano Colline Lucchesi Rosso will put some of the most iconic Super Tuscans (i.e. Sassicaia, Ornellaia, and Solaia) in the rearview mirror for transparency, purity, and elegance. 

We’re excited to offer to select members Valgiano’s top-shelf wine, which has won Gambero Rosso’s “Tre Bicchieri” award more than a dozen times. This effort is in the same conversation as top-tier Brunello di Montalcino, but has more terroir-driven refinement for a fraction of the cost of the 2020s that will be landing in the late Spring. This is ready to impress and will cellar well for another five to seven years.

This “Rosso” is an outlier in today's "Super-Tuscan" universe due to its high percentage of Sangiovese and its home outside of Lucca, which is about an hour's drive north of Bolgheri, the epicenter of "Super-Tuscan" production which introduces more Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in the blend. 

After tasting this effort, we concur with the importer that this is the best rendition for this wine, thanks to the high percentage of Sangiovese, with the remainder comprised of Merlot and Syrah. The magic starts with a dark-fruited, smoky, slightly meaty Syrah personality but also the tension and wild cherry fruit of a great Sangiovese wine. Whereas many Bolgheri wines that incorporate Syrah are massively extracted and almost Shiraz-like, this wine is lifted, structured, elegant even…like a proper Brunello di Montalcino mixed with a noble Northern Rhône appellation wine (Côte-Rôtie or Cornas).
