Artemis Karamolegos is a Santorini local, born and bred. Like a few papous we know, his grandfather made wine at home in the 1950s, but couldn’t have imagined that his grandson would create one of the most dynamic and elite wineries on the island. His ancient, 100 plus year old Assyrtiko vines, are gnarled nests rooted deep in volcanic ash and limestone, planted in bowls to capture scarce water and shelter from the wind. The white he makes from them is a revelation, and belongs on every serious wine lover’s table alongside a piece of grilled fish. Outside top Greek restaurants, It’s nearly impossible to find in the US.
Why You’ll Love It
Bristling with fresh Meyer lemon peel, honeysuckle, and melon flavors, few white wines on earth are as refreshing as Assyrtiko from Santorini.
Karamolegos makes the wine in a succulent, modern style, and no oak to get in the way of this unique terroir on earth. Old vines give fine concentration.
No wine from the Mediterranean is more transporting, or pairs better with grilled fish, crustaceans—or just a book by the pool—than fresh, lively Assyrtiko like this.
