2020 Boccella, Taurasi DOCG "Sant'Eustachio"

The Boccella family farms in Castelfranci, a small hillside commune in the province of Avellino that sits at the heart of the Taurasi DOCG, Campania's most prestigious appellation and often called the "Barolo of the South." It's a family-run operation from vine to bottle: pruning, harvest, and cellar work are all done by hand, with mechanical intervention kept to a minimum. The estate farms under European organic certification, a philosophy the family sees as the only honest way to let Castelfranci's volcanic-influenced clay and limestone soils speak clearly through the wine.

"Sant'Eustachio" is Boccella's flagship Taurasi, made almost entirely from Aglianico, the tannic, late-ripening grape that thrives in these high-elevation Irpinian vineyards. Following DOCG regulations, the wine spends an extended stretch aging in large traditional oak casks before further time settling in bottle, a slow process that rounds out Aglianico's naturally firm tannins while preserving the grape's dark fruit and earthy complexity. The result is a Taurasi of real structure and warmth, balanced by the freshness and savory lift that define the best wines of this terroir.

Why You'll Love It

  • A deep ruby-garnet color hints at the density packed into this glass.
  • The nose offers a layered mix of dark red fruit, dried herbs, licorice, and cocoa.
  • The palate is full-bodied and complex, with a rounded, deliciously ripe tannic structure.
  • A pleasant warmth and freshness balance each other on the mid-palate.
  • The finish is long and savory, with lingering spice and dark fruit.
  • A serious food wine that rewards patience, whether opened tonight with a decant or cellared for years to come.

How To Serve It

  • Serve at 61-64°F, slightly below room temperature, to keep the wine's structure in balance.
  • Give it a full hour in the decanter to soften the tannins and let the aromatics unfold.
  • Pour into large-bowled Burgundy-style stems to give the wine room to breathe.
  • Pair with a wild boar ragù over pappardelle, a classic Campanian match for Aglianico's structure and earthy depth.
