This isn't just wine; it’s a structural pivot for the entire Vinho Verde category. For those who gravitate toward Spanish Albariño, it’s time for a regional detour across the border to where this grape truly finds its muscle. Forget the poolside spritz or the fizzy, off-dry bottles that dominate the "cheap and cheerful" shelf. This is "A Torre" from the legendary Anselmo Mendes, a wine that doesn't just sit at the table—it flips it. Hailing from the granitic heart of Monção e Melgaço, Mendes proves that Portugal owns the soul of this variety. By holding the wine for an extraordinary four years of bottle age before release, he achieves a structural gravity typically reserved for the Grand Crus of Chablis or the Côte de Beaune.
The 2019 "A Torre" is a revelation of tension and textural opulence, born from 30-40-year-old vines rooted deep in weathered granite. On the palate, it is an absolute lightning strike of flavor: imagine biting into a chilled, salt-crusted white peach, followed immediately by a rush of Meyer lemon curd and toasted hazelnuts. The nine months of lees stirring in French oak lends a seductive, creamy weight that coats the tongue, only to be sliced clean by a laser-like, electric acidity that leaves your mouth watering for another sip. It is savory, smokey, and profoundly mineral, echoing the crushed stone of its birthplace with every lingering breath.
Culled from a meticulous selection of the best bunches across eight distinct soil micro-plots at Quinta da Torre, this is the flagship of an estate that has redefined an entire DOC. Mendes has traded the "fizz" for focus, delivering a wine of spellbinding depth and age-worthy power. Whether you are a Burgundy obsessive or a seeker of the world’s great mineral whites, this bottle is a revelation. It is a sophisticated, terroir-driven elixir that bridges the gap between the Atlantic’s cooling breeze and the raw, stony intensity of the Iberian crust. Do not put this in a box; put it in your cellar.
"A true testament to the heights of Alvarinho. Obrigado!"
Critical Acclaim:
96 Points, James Suckling:
"Dried peaches, honey, white flowers and hints of nectarines and grapefruit zest on the nose. The palate is medium- to full-bodied, incisive and concentrated, with a ripe core that expands gracefully in the finish. Beautifully balanced between richness, fruit and acidity. This comes from a single parcel within a single vineyard in Moncao. Fermented and aged for nine months in used barrels, followed by bottle aging for four years. Drink now."
96 Points, Wine Advocate:
"The 2019 A Torre is a new Alvarinho, sourced from the Quinta da Torre property. They selected the very best bunches, the ripest from each plant, using the eight different soils/textures they have. It fermented in used 400-liter barrels, where the wine matured with the full lees for nine months. It has a bright almost fluorescent color and complexity, depth, clout, freshness and elegance, with a lot of subtleness and notes of truffle, spices and herbs. The super-balanced palate has citrus freshness, tangerine, herbs and a salty twist. This goes way beyond being a varietal wine‡it's elegant, mineral and complex, one of the best Alvarinho/Albari¤o wines in the world. There is a crystalline purity here that is breathtaking. For Anselmo Mendez, 2019 was an exceptional year, and the wine should be truly long lived. 4,000 bottles were filled in June 2020 and kept for no less than 54 months in bottle before it was released in early 2025."
