2010 Champagne Saint-Chamant "Cuvee de Chardonnay" Brut, Epernay

Champagne Saint-Chamant has been in the hands of the Coquillette family since 1930, but heritage alone isn't what makes this bottle special. What separates Saint-Chamant from most of Champagne is a commitment that few houses would be willing—or able—to make today. The family farms Grand Cru Chardonnay in Chouilly, one of the great villages of the Côte des Blancs, then holds its top wines for years before release. This 2010 Cuvée de Chardonnay spent a full decade aging on its lees before disgorgement, an extraordinary stretch of cellar time that ties up inventory, demands patience, and requires complete confidence in the wine. Few producers can afford to do it. Even fewer still choose to.

The fruit comes entirely from Grand Cru Chardonnay vineyards rooted in the chalk and limestone soils of Chouilly, a village long prized for producing some of Champagne's most complete expressions of Blanc de Blancs. The 2010 vintage delivered wines of concentration, structure, and longevity, and Saint-Chamant responded with the kind of élevage that allows a great vintage to fully reveal itself. Fifteen years after harvest, the wine carries the energy and mineral precision that define the Côte des Blancs, layered with the brioche, roasted nuts, citrus oil, and deep textural richness that only emerge after years on the lees. This is mature Blanc de Blancs with the pedigree of Grand Cru fruit, the benefit of a great vintage, and the patience of a family that has spent nearly a century doing things its own way.

Why You'll Love It

  • A full decade of lees aging before disgorgement—far beyond what most vintage Champagnes receive.
  • 100% Grand Cru Chardonnay from Chouilly, one of the Côte des Blancs' most important villages for Blanc de Blancs.
  • Fifteen years removed from harvest and drinking in a beautiful place today.

How to Serve It

  • Serve in a white wine glass at 48-52°F rather than a flute.
  • Give it a few minutes in the glass to allow the full spectrum of aromas to emerge.
  • Pair with lobster, scallops, roast chicken, aged Comté, or enjoy it on its own and let the wine tell the story.
