Southern Hemisphere Icons

These aren't just four good bottles — each is the benchmark bottling for its region, the wine every competitor gets measured against. From Jeffrey Grosset's "unchallenged master" status in Clare Valley Riesling to Pedro Parra's single-handed revival of old-vine Cinsault in Chile, from the Catena family's Grand Cru Malbec site in Mendoza to Mullineux's undisputed reign over Swartland Syrah, this four-bottle collection tours the producers who define what world-class means outside Europe.

Grosset, Riesling "Springvale", Clare Valley, Australia

"Springvale"

Jeffrey Grosset single-handedly dragged Australian Riesling into the modern era, and James Halliday calls him the "unchallenged master" of the craft. Born from red loam and limestone "terra rossa" soils in Watervale, the 2024 Springvale is bone-dry and crystalline — lime zest, wet slate, and white spring flowers over an electric, saline finish. Triple 95 points from Halliday, Suckling, and Wine Advocate.

Pair with: Singapore chili crab.

Pedro Parra, "Miles" Cinsault, Itata Valley, Chile

"Miles"

Pedro Parra holds a PhD in terroir from Paris and has consulted for Comando G and Zuccardi; "Miles" is his own top-scoring wine, a tribute to Miles Davis grown on 45–70 year old bush vines in Itata's iron-rich granite soils. Wine Advocate gave it 98 points, calling out its Burgundy- and Cru Beaujolais-like elegance — lifted red fruit, earthy minerality, and a silky, jazz-like finish.

Pair with: Wild mushroom and thyme tart.

Bodega Catena Zapata, Malbec "Fortuna Terrae", Adrianna Vineyard, Mendoza, Argentina

"Fortuna Terrae"

The Catena family is ground zero for high-altitude viticulture in Mendoza, and this single-parcel bottling from the legendary Adrianna Vineyard (nearly 5,000 feet, limestone-coated white stones) proves it — 98 points from James Suckling, with dual 97s from Vinous and Jeb Dunnuck. Crushed blueberries, dark plum, cocoa, and lavender meet chalky limestone tannins on a long, mineral-laced finish.

Pair with: Grass-fed lamb chops with chimichurri.

Mullineux, Syrah "Schist – Roundstone", Swartland, South Africa

"Schist – Roundstone"

Chris and Andrea Mullineux are the undisputed benchmark of Swartland, and this bottling from the iron-rich Kasteelberg schist soils is their most powerful — an "iron fist in a velvet glove" that trades blows with top Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage. 95+ points from Wine Spectator, James Suckling, and Vinous, with notes of bacon fat, black olive tapenade, peppercorn, and brambleberry.

Pair with: Smoked brisket with black olive tapenade.
