2019 Diego Morra, Barolo Cru "Monvigliero"

In the meticulously mapped world of Barolo, the French-inspired term "Grand Cru" finds its Italian soul in the MGA (Menzione Geografica Aggiuntiva) system. At the absolute apex of this hierarchy sits Monvigliero. If Barolo were Burgundy, Monvigliero would be its Musigny—a site of legendary elegance and soaring aromatics. Diego Morra stands in the "catbird seat" of this 20-hectare hillside as its largest single owner, farming 4 hectares of heirloom vines that average 40 years of age.

Finding a 2019 or 2020 Monvigliero for under $100 is nearly impossible in today’s market, with several benchmark bottlings now commanding well over $200 (see the retail snapshot below). At just $95.00 on two or more bottles, this offering represents a rare window to secure a true pillar of the appellation before the market fully corrects to its rightful pedigree.

The magic of Monvigliero lies in its unique geography. Positioned in Verduno, the northernmost commune of Barolo, the vineyard is deeply influenced by its close proximity to the Tanaro River. While southern villages often face intense heat, Monvigliero benefits from cooling nocturnal air currents that descend from the Alps and follow the riverbed. This creates a dramatic diurnal shift, preserving the high-toned, spicy aromatics—white pepper, red currant, and dried rose—that have made this Cru the most sought-after "hot territory" for serious collectors.

Morra’s 2019 is classic Nebbiolo transparency. It pours a brilliant, translucent garnet, immediately erupting with the "tell-tale" Monvigliero signatures: cracked white pepper, blood orange, wild strawberry, and sandalwood. On the palate, the wine is silky and weightless, showing the incredible finesse of its limestone-rich Marne di Sant’Agata soils. The 2019 is remarkably elegant, defined by fine-grained tannins and a salt-streaked mineral finish that benefits from 60 to 90 minutes of aeration. It is a wine of 'breeding'—vibrant and expressive now, yet possessing the structural architecture to evolve gracefully for two decades.

Critical Acclaim:

95 Points, Wine Enthusiast:

  • “Jump into a glass where black cherries and wild plums meet woodland spices and star anise. The aromatics keep building: fresh blackberries dusted with cardamom forest floor and sweet pipe tobacco creating a fascinating complexity. The flavors surge forward with impressive concentration where toasted oak currently frames the wine but needs time to fully harmonize with the abundant fruit. Each element speaks of finesse rather than raw power bringing energy and vibrancy to every sip. This is a serious wine showing both immediate appeal and future promise through its purity and thoughtful craftsmanship.”
