Master Somm Selection: Napa Valley Experience

Napa Valley is the undisputed king of American wine, a region built on ambition, perfect climate, and world-class terroir. This four-bottle Master Selection explores the valley's diverse expressions, from a benchmark Rutherford Chardonnay to a historic Coombsville Malbec, and finishes with two distinct takes on Napa's signature grape: a perfectly aged benchland Cabernet and a powerful, insider-secret blend from Calistoga and Howell Mountain. This is Napa Valley at its most compelling.

Forman, Chardonnay Estate, Rutherford, California

"The Benchmark"

The Forman Estate Chardonnay comes from a singular Napa site on the Rutherford Bench, where well-drained soils and old-vine sensibility give the wine its unmistakable sense of place. Ric Forman has spent decades shaping Chardonnay with a seasoned hand, and that experience shows here in the wine's balance of ripe orchard fruit, citrus oil, toasted nut, and subtle spice, all wrapped in a creamy but finely etched frame. It is generous without being flashy, refined without being austere, and captures what Ric Forman has always done best: make Chardonnay with depth, texture, and freshness in equal measure.

Pair with: Double-cut pork chops napped in apple-Calvados cream sauce, or roast chicken.

Farella Malbec, Coombsville, California

"The Historic Estate"

Farella Vineyard is one of Coombsville's foundational estates, with roots going back to the late nineteen seventies when Frank Farella began planting vines on this cool, volcanic site at the eastern edge of Napa Valley. The property became a winery in nineteen eighty-five, shaped by a family-driven commitment to thoughtful farming and small production. This Malbec comes from that same deeply expressive vineyard, where volcanic soils, rocky slopes, and the region's naturally cooler growing conditions help preserve freshness and structure. It fits beautifully into the site's mix of exposures and soil diversity, offering dark fruit, floral lift, and a firm, mineral edge.

Pair with: Grilled lamb, tri-tip, short ribs, or mushroom dishes.

Cornerstone Benchlands, Napa Valley, California

"The Perfect Age"

Cornerstone's "Benchlands" is classic Napa Cabernet with a modern polish: dark, glossy fruit, serious structure, and just enough plushness to make the next sip inevitable. From prime benchland sites where the valley floor begins to rise toward the hills, this Cabernet captures the sweet spot between power and poise. The nose is all black plum, blackberry preserves, and cassis, wrapped in violets, lilac, and warm baking spice. On the palate, waves of dark fruit roll through layers of dark chocolate, licorice, cedar, clove, and a touch of tobacco, carried by ripe, fine-grained tannins. The finish is long, spicy, and cocoa-tinged.

Pair with: Grilled ribeye, short ribs, or a truffled burger.

Karl Lawrence, Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, California

"The Insider Secret"

For over three decades, Karl Lawrence Cellars has operated strictly as an insider, word-of-mouth secret. With no flashy tasting room and zero marketing bloat, every single penny goes directly into the juice. Winemaker Bruce Devlin built this voluptuous blend using two historic heritage sites he knows intimately. The core relies on the Pocai Vineyard in Calistoga, where the warm valley floor delivers a rich, deeply concentrated core of plush boysenberry and black currant. To balance that opulence, he layers in fruit from the Fig Tree Vineyard at the base of Howell Mountain, injecting the wine with real structure, fresh acidity, and complex undertones of crushed graphite. Thoughtfully aged in premium French oak that acts as a supporting frame rather than a mask, it adds faint traces of mocha and baking spice without ever weighing down the decadent fruit.

Pair with: Prime dry-aged steak, braised beef, or rich stews.
