Master Somm Selection: "Ciao, Vino Italiano"

From the alpine foothills of Piedmont to the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna, Italy offers a staggering diversity of terroirs and indigenous grape varieties. This six-bottle collection moves across the country's most compelling regions: a mineral-driven Timorasso from the hills of southeast Piemonte, an old-vine Verdicchio from the Marche that ages like white Burgundy, a historic Barolo Cru from a pioneering female winemaker, a Chianti Classico Gran Selezione rooted in an eleventh-century vineyard, a velvety Lagrein Riserva from a family estate in Bolzano that has survived since 1788, and an ancient-vine Nerello Mascalese from the volcanic northeast slopes of Etna.

Ricci Timorasso Derthona, Colli Tortonesi, Piedmont, Italy

"The White Barolo"

Fourth-generation farmer Daniele Ricci works certified-organic vines in the heart of Colli Tortonesi, where he was instrumental in resurrecting Timorasso, an ancient variety that defies Italian white wine norms. This is no light quaffer: full-bodied, with high extract, firm acidity, and serious aging potential, it sees three days of skin contact for phenolic grip and pours light gold with ripe apricot, honeyed stone fruit, flint, and spice, building to a long, structured finish.

Pair with: Vitello tonnato, grilled branzino, or aged Grana Padano.

Umani Ronchi, "Vecchie Vigne" Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore, Marche, Italy

"The Old Vine Revelation"

Umani Ronchi transformed Verdicchio from a simple Adriatic seaside wine into something that ages with the grace of white Burgundy. The "Vecchie Vigne" comes from old plantings at high elevation in Montecarotto, one of Verdicchio's finest crus, rooted in deep clay-loam soils loaded with calcium. Hand-harvested and aged ten months on the lees in concrete tanks, it develops notes of lemon curd, poached pear, almond, and a distinctive mineral edge that keeps drawing you back to the glass.

Pair with: Seafood risotto, fresh pasta with clams, or simply prepared fish.

Virna Borgogno, Barolo "Sarmassa", Piedmont, Italy

"The Historic Cru"

The Borgogno family's viticultural roots stretch back to the eighteenth century, a heritage now carried forward by Virna Borgogno, Italy's first female oenology graduate. The legendary Sarmassa Cru sits among Barolo's bolder sites, its fuller body and silkier tannins setting it apart from leaner neighbors. Fermented in concrete and aged eighteen months across Slavonian casks and Allier tonneaux, the wine captures an intoxicating perfume of roses and crystalline red fruits, with the structural intensity to develop magnificently in the cellar.

Pair with: Pappardelle with wild mushroom ragù, or osso buco.

Rocca di Montegrossi, Chianti Classico Gran Selezione "San Marcellino", Tuscany, Italy

"The Iron Baron's Legacy"

Proprietor Marco Ricasoli-Firidolfi is the direct descendant of the "Iron Baron" who created the original recipe for Chianti Classico. The "San Marcellino" vineyard, anchored by an eleventh-century church, yields a Gran Selezione of sheer pedigree. Blending Sangiovese with a small amount of the rare indigenous Pugnitello grape, and aged over four years in barrel and bottle, it displays layers of black cherry, crushed minerals, leather, and wild medicinal herbs, framed by fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity.

Pair with: Bistecca alla Fiorentina, wild boar ragu, or aged Pecorino.

Nusserhof (Heinrich Mayr), Südtirol Lagrein "Riserva", Alto Adige, Italy

"The Alpine Anomaly"

Heinrich Mayr tends a historic 2.4-hectare green oasis in Bolzano, a defiant remnant of the city's ancient agricultural soul that his family has farmed since 1788. Working forty-year-old organic vines through low-intervention methods, he crafts a Lagrein of profound character that demands the same respect as a Grand Cru Burgundy or a top-tier Barolo. Concentrated layers of crushed blackberries, violets, and a savory streak of smoked meat and forest floor are framed by firm, velvety tannins and a bracing acidity, carrying the dark fruit through a long, mineral-drenched finish.

Pair with: Venison stew, smoked pork ribs, or aged Speck with dark bread.

Tenuta Fessina "Il Musmeci" Etna Rosso Riserva, Sicily, Italy

"The Volcano's Voice"

The late Silvia Maestrelli was a pioneer of Etna winegrowing, cultivating ancient vines deeply rooted in the black volcanic soil of Rovittello. Named for the original owners of the land, the Musmeci vineyard sits in the heart of Etna's northeast slopes. This ancient-vine Nerello Mascalese is filled with vibrant strawberry and marasca cherry fruit, penetrating minerality, and remarkable concentration, offering sweet spices, rose petals, and a silky, round palate with pronounced vivid acidity.

Pair with: Swordfish with salmoriglio, grilled lamb chops, or pasta alla Norma.
