2022 E. Guigal, Côte-Rôtie “La Mouline”

In the world of blue-chip wine collecting, E. Guigal’s single-site Côte-Rôtie icons stand at the absolute apex of the Northern Rhône. Sourced from an ancient, sun-drenched natural amphitheater on the Côte Blonde, “La Mouline” is the most voluptuously textured and intensely aromatic of the estate's legendary "La-La" trilogy. Formed on light, mica-rich gneiss loess soils and co-fermented with a generous 11% Viognier, this microscopic parcel yields a Syrah of incomparable grace, perfume, and seamless balance.

Tasting Note:

In the glass, it radiates a vivid ruby-purple core with shimmering clarity. The nose explodes with an intoxicating perfume of crushed violet petals, fresh cassis, black olive tapenade, smoked bacon fat, and a subtle lift of white peach blossom. The palate is velvet-smooth and hedonistic right out of the gate, gliding effortlessly with concentrated dark berry fruit, sweet spice, and a fine bed of granite-driven minerality. Aged for 42 months in custom in-house barriques, its tannins are silky and fully integrated, promising immediate pleasure alongside decades of graceful cellar evolution.

Critical Acclaim:

97-100 Points, Jeb Dunnuck:

"Black raspberries, wildflowers, and bacon fat emerge from the 2022 Côte Rôtie La Mouline, which has an exotic yet dark, rich, and powerful profile. Based on 89% Syrah and 11% Viognier and aged 42 months in new oak, it has plenty of mid-palate depth, full-bodied richness, and ripe tannins, all while maintaining classic La Mouline character and sexiness."

Robert Parker Wine Advocate Logo

94-96 Points, Wine Advocate:

"Notes of iris, oak, ripe dark berries and spices intertwined with an oaky character preface the 2022 Cote Rotie La Mouline, a blend of 89% Syrah and 11% Viognier. Full-bodied, dense and suave, it's enveloping and concentrated. With a rich chassis of tannins and a muscular yet sappy structure, it concludes with a long, oaky and spicy finish. Compared to its counterparts, La Mouline is always more enveloping and charming when young; this vintage is no exception."
