2022 Domaine de Colette, Morgon "Charme", Cru Beaujolais

Domaine de Colette is the kind of family estate we love to champion at SommSelect: old-school, deeply rooted, and far too good to stay under the radar. Based in Lantignié, just west of Morgon, the Gauthier family has been farming these hills since 1953, when René Gauthier planted the seeds of what would become a quietly indispensable Beaujolais domaine. Today, Jacky and Evelyne Gauthier carry the torch, joined by their son Pierre-Alexandre, who brought formal viticulture and enology training back to the family table. Their farming is practical, low-intervention, and unapologetically hands-on: no chemical fertilizers, organic treatments only, and enough vineyard discipline to let the fruit speak without dressing it up.

The 2022 Morgon “Charme” is where that philosophy gets really interesting. This is not generic Beaujolais; this is Cru Morgon, one of the region’s most serious addresses, and Charme is the named vineyard site that gives the wine its extra layer of identity and depth. In the glass, that cru distinction matters. You get the lifted perfume and bright energy you want from Gamay, but also the darker fruit, mineral spine, and quietly formidable structure that make Morgon such a cult favorite among Beaujolais insiders. Add in old vines, a south-facing site, carbonic fermentation, cement-vat élevage, and no filtration, and you’ve got a wine that drinks with both immediate pleasure and enough backbone to make you want a second bottle in the cellar.

Why You’ll Love It

  • Cru Beaujolais from Morgon, old vine depth, serious structure and serious deliciousness

  • “Charme” is 80-100 year old vines yielding dark fruit with mineral tension and balance with some age-worthiness ahead

How to Serve It

  • Serve it slightly cool, around 55–60°F in Burgundy-style glass

  • Delectable with roast chicken, duck, mushrooms, charcuterie, or coq au vin, where Morgon’s savory depth really shines.
