2016 Domaine Gérard Millet, Sancerre Rouge "Sur le Clou"

Don’t sleep on Sancerre Rouge. While crisp Sauvignon Blanc completely dominates the appellation, true insiders know that Sancerre's rare, 100% Pinot Noir bottlings—which account for less than 20% of total production—offer some of the most compelling values in the wine world. If you were to hunt for this level of structural pedigree just a few hours east in the Côte de Nuits, you’d easily double the ticket price. To find the highest caliber of Pinot Noir, we went straight to the heart of Bué, the appellation’s most revered sub-village, to secure an allocation from a five-barrel micro-production from "Sur le Clou” site.

The iron-rich clay soils of this specific site are littered with the massive limestone rocks depicted on the bottle's front label. These ancient stones absorb daytime sun and radiate heat back to the vines at night, allowing Pinot Noir to achieve a level of true, luxurious ripeness rarely seen in the Loire. While most Sancerre Rouge hitting the market consists of tightly wound 2023s and 2024s, this ultra-rare 2016 library release has spent years perfectly integrating in the bottle. Fermented and aged in second-pass French oak barrels bartered from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, it delivers a masterful balance of mature complexity backed by Bué's signature crunchy minerality.

Pull the cork and you are greeted by a wine that beautifully echoes a perfectly aged, high-end red Burgundy. The nose offers a complex, integrated web of dark cherry, dried flowers, chanterelle mushrooms, and fine black tea. On the palate, the fruit is deeply concentrated yet weightless, framed by silky, tertiary tannins and a piercing, chalky core that carries into a long, floral finish. We only received a tiny sliver of this library release, so secure your share of this cellared Pinot before the final bottle vanishes.

"Santé!"
