2021 Château Arricau-Bordes, Madiran

We haven’t featured a Madiran in years, but when we found this dazzler from historic Château Arricau-Bordes—awarded a rare 97 Points from the Decanter World Wine Awards—we couldn't resist. This 7-hectare estate delivers Pyrenean magic showcasing Madiran’s secret weapon: Tannat. Translating as intentionally inky, structured, and tannic, it delivers everything serious wine lovers crave. If you routinely seek out hearty Languedoc red blends, Côtes du Rhône, or Cahors by the case, take serious note—this is your ultimate hearty meat red pairing wine. This allocation is already creating quite a buzz for its unbelievable quality-to-price ratio.

Never before exported to the USA, Arricau-Bordes is a historic gem locally famous as the most visually stunning property in Madiran, responsible for some of the most concentrated and complex Tannat produced in the AOC each year. Even in the context of this niche appellation, the wines from these 35-year-old vines stand out with an uncanny combination of dry extract, minerality, and acidity. That precision comes down to a unique terroir of high-altitude galet stones over clay, allowing the château to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the top benchmark estates of the Pyrenean foothills, including Château Montus, the region's most iconic property.

In the glass, the 2021 "Grand Vin" commands attention with an impenetrable dark ruby-purple core. Intense aromatics of crushed black plum, dark cassis, and wild blackberry merge with pipe tobacco, scorched earth, espresso, and dried thyme, giving way to a dense palate of dark forest fruit, firm broad-shouldered tannins, and a long, savory finish. If you crave traditionally made, hearty French reds, then this is a case buy.

Critical Acclaim:

97 Points, Decanter World Wine Awards:

“Indelibly concentrated, displaying awe-inspiring layers of plush blackberry, blueberry, dark cherry and violet, feverish quelled by a savoury black olive note. Vibrating with quenching acidity that drives through the opaque structure and tannins. Very long.”

Why You'll Love It

  • It is a quintessential expression of Madiran, perfect for collectors seeking powerful, age-worthy, and deeply savory Southwestern French reds.
  • The 2021 vintage provides wonderful freshness and lift, balancing Tannat's intense power with a vibrant core of acidity.
  • The nose exhibits complex layers of black plums, dark blackberries, licorice, leather, cigar box, and fresh espresso bean.
  • The palate is robust, muscular, and dense, packed with rich, dry tannins that soften into a long, warming finish.
  • It offers remarkable value for a historic, single-estate red built to evolve over a decade or more.

How To Serve It

  • Serve at a cool room temperature between 62°F and 65°F to ensure the firm tannins remain smooth on the palate.
  • Given the dense tannin structure of Tannat, a decant of at least 1 to 1.5 hours is strongly advised before serving.
  • Pour into appropriate stemware to give the deep, earthy, and spicy aromatics room to open.
  • Demands rich, hearty fare, pairing beautifully with cassoulet, grilled ribeye steak, confit duck leg, or slow-braised beef short ribs.
