2023 Mathieu Laboureau, Volnay

Domaine Laboureau is a multi‑generation Volnay family estate, with Pascal and Mathieu now stewarding a tiny mosaic of Côte de Beaune parcels that have been in the family since the 17th century. Their Volnay vines sit on lighter, stonier soils between Pommard and Meursault, where elevations and limestone‑rich subsoils naturally favor finesse over muscle, giving Pinot Noir that is classically Volnaysien: perfumed, silken, and quietly powerful. Farming is hands‑on and largely organic in spirit, with careful seasonal work on each parcel and multiple passes through the vineyard to balance yields and achieve even ripeness—formal organic certification arriving in 2023 after decades of sustainable practice.

In the cellar, the Volnay is made in a deliberately classical style: hand‑picked Pinot Noir is carefully sorted, de-stemmed, and fermented in traditional vats before aging around 16–18 months in mostly older French oak, preserving purity of fruit while adding gentle spice and texture. In the glass, you can expect bright ruby color, a nose of violet, cherry, and small red fruits with hints of gooseberry and plum that deepen over time into notes of earth, cocoa, and subtle game. The palate is typically medium‑bodied and velvety, with juicy red and black fruit, fine‑grained tannins, and a fresh, warming finish that feels like biting into perfectly ripe fruit—elegant rather than showy, and built for both early charm and medium‑term cellaring.

Why You’ll Love It

  • Silky, perfumed Pinot Noir that captures Volnay’s reputation for elegance and finesse rather than sheer power.

  • Artisanal, multi‑generation family estate farming small holdings with organic, low‑intervention methods that foreground terroir.

  • A ripe, charming 2023 red with vibrant fruit, supple tannins, and enough structure to age while remaining delicious in its youth.

How To Serve It

  • Serve at cool‑cellar temperature, around 55–60°F, in generous Burgundy stems to let the aromatics and texture fully unfold.

  • Decant gently for 30–45 minutes if young to soften tannins and bring up the floral and red‑fruit perfume.

  • Pair with refined dishes rather than heavy sauces—roast chicken, duck breast, pork tenderloin, mushrooms, or mild, earthy cheeses that echo the wine’s subtle savory notes.
