Just 45 minutes southwest of Madrid, the rugged, high-altitude peaks of the Sierra de Gredos are producing some of the most thrilling, terroir-driven reds in the wine world. Leading critics agree, backing the spectacular 2021 Vitícola Mentridana 'Las Uvas de la Ira' Garnacha with a stellar 94 points from James Suckling and 93 points from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. Far from the heavy, jammy Grenache of Southeast Australia or the muscular blends of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, this wine delivers the ethereal purity, laser focus, and haunting minerality of an elite Red Burgundy. After one taste, we locked the entire parcel being held by the importer. We strongly recommend a six-bottle buy-in for 32% off the list price!
The star power behind this bottle represents a monumental passing of the torch between two of Spain's modern winemaking legends. These vineyards were originally the foundation of Comando G co-founder Dani Landi’s eponymous project. When Landi stepped away to focus entirely on Comando G, he entrusted these pristine, 70-year-old vines to his childhood friend Curro Barreño—the genius behind the cult Galician project, Fedellos. Barreño has taken Landi’s meticulous foundations and elevated them, keeping a light touch in the cellar with whole-cluster fermentation and indigenous yeasts. It is a rare chance to catch the evolutionary leap of the Gredos region, direct from a project that is quickly cementing its status as a modern classic.
Now with over four years of bottle age, this 2021 release is in a beautiful sweet spot, showing incredible depth and energy. Give it an hour in the decanter and serve it with a slight cellar chill to watch it truly unfold. The pour reveals a brilliant, translucent ruby color, leaping from the glass with racy dark strawberries, pomegranate, hibiscus, and cracked white pepper. On the palate, the wine cuts with a vibrant, jagged line of freshness and chalky tension—a direct translation of the poor, free-draining sandy and granitic soils where these ancient roots struggle. One bottle is never enough with a great meal, so stock up before it's gone for good.
¡Viva España!
Critical Acclaim:
94 Points, James Suckling:
"Lots of fruit here with racy dark strawberries, pomegranate, raspberries, hibiscus and boysenberries infused with a hint of stones and herbs. Ripe and firm on the palate with very firm, fresh tannins and a nimble finish. Effortlessly drinkable now, but can hold, too."
93 Points, Wine Advocate:
“The 2021 Las Uvas de la Ira, produced and sold before by Dani Landi, is now a wine from Vitícola Mentridana under the direction of Curro Bareño, who takes over in this cool vintage. It was produced in the same way, from six vineyards in the village El Real De San Vicente, fermented separately and, depending on the vineyards, with shorter or longer macerations (longer in the vineyard they called El Fin del Mundo). Vinification has been like this since 2017, with contained extraction from the earlier-ripening vineyards and getting more grip from the slow-ripening places that have the rock and give the grip. It has contained ripeness and very good balance and expression, with fruit and juicy, but it also has chalky grip.”
