This is flat-out our most incredible native white blend from Europe in 2026! In a Spanish wine region dominated by a sea of heavy, robust Tempranillo, this striking white stands completely alone. It comes from Vagüera, a minuscule, single half-hectare plot of abandoned vines hidden away at a breathtaking 950 meters of elevation just south of Toro. We are talking about a vineyard the size of a backyard garden, where the high altitude, cool north-facing exposure, and rocky red clay over limestone bedrock produce a thinking-person's white wine with unmatched tension and drive. At under forty dollars, this is a rare, boundary-pushing bottle that delivers absolute electricity and deep complexity.
The magic of Vagüera lies in its historic, antique bush vines that were planted all the way back in 1921. Rather than a single grape, this is a true, ancient field blend dominated by Doña Blanca alongside a bewildering mix of more than a dozen co-planted native varietals—including Godello, Verdejo, Malvasía, and several types of Albillo and Moscatel. This historic site was rescued and brought back to life via organic and biodynamic farming by winemaker Alvar de Dios. Having cut his teeth alongside the legendary vinous rebels of the Sierra de Gredos, Alvar utilizes gentle wood aging to craft a texturally brilliant masterpiece that lets the extreme terroir speak for itself.
Now showing its perfect harmony after nine years of patient bottle aging, the 2016 vintage explodes with oodles of energy and intense mineral cut. The palate is deeply layered, balancing a rich, slightly waxen texture with a vibrant, intensely savory, and saline finish that leaves you craving another sip. It handles complex seafood or roasted poultry with effortless grace. With its incredible precision, stony depth, and profound evolution, this stunning bottle completely puts Grand Cru White Burgundy in the rear-view mirror for a fraction of the price.

Critical Acclaim:
93+ Points, Wine Advocate:
2019 was a warm and dry year with low yields, but the grapes didn't ripen much even if they lost water. So, the grapes for the 2019 Vagüera were picked with a moderate 12.5% alcohol while keeping good freshness and acidity, and the wine comes through as fresh and balanced with purity and cleanliness. It's tasty and juicy and finishes long, with a spicy twist and a long and somewhat salty finish.
