C. da Silva, "Dalva" 20-Year-Old Tawny Port, Douro
Founded in 1862, C. da Silva is one of the Douro's most historic boutique Port houses, recognized around the globe under its flagship "Dalva" marque. While celebrated for producing profound single-harvest Colheitas, Dalva's age-indicated tawnies represent the master blender's art. The 20-Year-Old Tawny is a marriage of selected micro-lots aged across decades in seasoned 550- to 600-liter oak casks (pipas) within the house's historic cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia.
At 20 years of average cask age, the fresh fruit character of the original schist-grown varieties (Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, and Tinto Cão) has softened into an amber-tinged, nutty, oxidative profile. It reveals aromas of roasted hazelnuts, dried figs, candied orange peel, butterscotch, cigar tobacco, and cardamom spice, carried across the palate by refreshing natural acidity that cleanses the sweetness on the finish.
