2019 António Bernardino Paulo da Silva, "Casal da Azenha" Tinto (Cork Label), Vinho Regional Lisboa
Adega Beira Mar, guided by the legendary António Bernardino Paulo da Silva, is one of the last historic sanctuaries preserving ancient coastal viticulture near Colares. While his "Chitas" line is reserved for the ungrafted sand dunes of Colares proper, "Casal da Azenha" is sourced from the adjoining hillside buffer zone (chão rijo, or hard soil), where clay-limestone soils meet cooling Atlantic coastal winds. The bottle is finished with a real cork label, a nod to traditional Portuguese craftsmanship.
Vinified in old open-top cement lagares and aged for several years in large, neutral Portuguese oak and exotic hardwood vats, this 2019 release represents classical, old-school Portuguese winemaking. Dominated by Castelão alongside Tinta Miúda and Aragonez, it shows dried red currants, sour cherries, leather, pine forest floor, cigar leaf, and sea salt, framed by rustic, food-friendly tannins and mouthwatering acidity.
