2019 Paolo Bea, “Rosso de Véo” IGT Umbria Rosso

From cult classic to collector’s essential, the wines of Paolo Bea—Umbria’s most celebrated vintner—have become must-haves for the serious connoisseur. A cellar stocked with Bea Sagrantino alongside the likes of Classified Growth Bordeaux, Premier/Grand Cru Burgundy, Barolo, and Brunello di Montalcino signals a discerning, adventurous palate.

As always with Paolo Bea, quantities are extremely limited. These are true showpieces for the cellar—secure yours while you can!

“Rosso de Véo” is a selection of the Bea estate’s younger Sagrantino vines, principally from the Cerrete vineyard which graces the highest point in Montefalco, between 1300 and 1500 feet above sea level. “Rosso de Véo” (first released in 2005) is most easily described as the “young-vine cuvée” in the Bea lineup, although it is vinified in much the same way as the estate’s pricier single-vineyard wines. Young vines these may be, but you’d never know it from the profound wine in the bottle.

95 Points, Vinous Media:

  • “ …  dark and brooding vintage for Veo, with depths of ripe red and blue fruit propelled by zesty acidity. Saline minerals saturate, and a primary concentration forms toward the close. It finishes dramatically long and tannic, yet they are round and soft contoured. Licorice and a tart cranberry concentration linger on and on. While labeled as Umbria Rosso, the Rosso de Veo could easily be a Montefalco Sagrantino …”
