2015 Château Coutelin-Merville, Saint-Estèphe

A decade of bottle age has unlocked the ultimate sweet spot for this outstanding Left Bank release, balancing vibrant, youthful fruit with rich tertiary complexity. Situated on the exact same clay-and-gravel ridge as Cos d’Estournel (2nd Growth) and Lafon-Rochet (4th Growth)—with select plots sandwiched directly between Montrose (2nd Growth) and Cos d'Estournel (2nd Growth)—this historic estate rests on world-class dirt.

In 2015, a warm and generous vintage where late harvest rains posed challenges for Cabernet-heavy producers, Coutelin-Merville’s unique blend proved to be a tactical triumph. Driven by 50% Merlot and an unusually high 22% Cabernet Franc (rounded out by Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot), this bottle completely bypassed the harsh, astringent tannins that plagued many of its neighbors. Right now, it pours with plush black cherry, graphite, dried violets, and warm tobacco spice.

That remarkable value is all thanks to the Estager family, who have owned and hand-farmed the estate since 1904. Rather than chasing modern extraction trends, they let their 30- to 40-year-old vines do the talking, aging the wine in just 30% new French oak to preserve its natural fruit purity and terroir-driven character. For over a century, the Estagers have quietly produced classic, site-specific Bordeaux that punches well above its weight class.

Why You'll Love It

  • Elite Terroir, Fraction of the Price: Vineyard plots sit directly adjacent to legendary neighbors like Montrose (2nd Growth), Cos d'Estournel (2nd Growth), and Lafon-Rochet (4th Growth).

  • Smart Vintage Composition: The high Merlot (50%) and Cabernet Franc (22%) blend avoided the late-harvest rain issues that affected Cabernet-dominant 2015 Left Bank wines.

  • Peak Drinking Window: A full ten years of bottle aging has softened the tannins and brought out rich, complex secondary and tertiary flavors—ready to enjoy immediately.

How to Serve It

  • Decanting: Decant for 30–45 minutes prior to serving to allow the graphite, floral, and tobacco spice aromatics to fully open up.

  • Serving Temperature: Enjoy at a cellar-cool temperature of 60°F–65°F (15°C–18°C) in large Bordeaux stemware.

  • Food Pairings: Pair alongside classic hearty dishes such as roast prime rib, herb-crusted lamb chops, or a wild mushroom risotto.
