2021 Guímaro, "Mundin" Tinto Ribeira Sacra

The steep, near-vertical terraces of DO Ribeira Sacra in inland Galicia demand a rare breed of "heroic viticulture"—reminiscent of the dramatic terrain of Côte-Rôtie or the Mosel. No one embodies this independent spirit quite like Pedro Rodríguez of Adegas Guímaro, whose family trajectory shifted from selling rustic house pours in 20-liter jugs to leading the region alongside legendary winemaker Raúl Pérez. Their singular, steeply inclined "Mundín" site perfectly captures the SommSelect mantra: it is a terroir-driven wonder whose profound sense of place translates instantly in the glass. Here, 60+ year-old heirloom varieties and the noble Mencía yield a red that seamlessly carries the smoky dark fruit of a Côte-Rôtie Syrah, the structural elegance of a Côte de Nuits Burgundy, and the peppery wild-berry tension of a Loire Valley Chinon or Saumur-Champigny.

While much of Ribeira Sacra is defined by slate soils along the Sil River, the "Mundín" bottling takes you on a different journey along the Miño River, where the ancient vines are rooted in deep, pure granitic soils. Pedro acts as a guardian of these heirloom grapes, preserving near-extinct varieties like Brancellao and Garnacha Tintorera alongside the old-vine Mencía. These slow-ripening traditional varieties are Pedro’s secret weapon against changing conditions; they naturally retain vibrant acidity and freshness even as the region’s vintage trends lean toward riper fruit.

Driven entirely by its unique granitic soils, the palate unfurls with a chiseled core of minerality and bright, precise acidity framed by fine-grained tannins. It beautifully captures the best attributes of those classic French benchmarks—balancing smoky depth, ethereal perfume, and a crisp wild-berry finish. Here is another terroir-driven wonder from Spain's Atlantic coast, a region gaining tremendous accolades and attention on the global scene.

¡Viva España!

94 Points, Wine Advocate:

“This is the second vintage of the wine from the banks of the Miño River. The 2021 Mundín was given a longer élevage of 18 months in a 3,000-liter French oak foudre. It feels a little closed, with austerity and contained ripeness, 12% alcohol, and it's possible that it didn't develop as much aromatic and flavor complexity as its sibling from the Sil Valley, San Pedro. The blend here is 80% Mencía and 20% Garnacha Tintorera and Grao Negro. It's light- to medium-bodied, with some honeyed notes and very nice tannins. The best is its mouthfeel.”
