The Comeback Kids: 4 Bottles from Rediscovered Regions | Mt. Etna, Toro, Jumilla

Some of the world's most exciting wines are coming from regions with ancient roots but a modern-day renaissance. These "comeback kids" are historic terroirs, once famous but later forgotten, now being rediscovered and revitalized by a new generation of visionary winemakers. This collection celebrates four such producers who are putting their forgotten regions back on the map, crafting wines of incredible character and sense of place.

From the sun-drenched vineyards of Spain to the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna, this 4-bottle pack is a journey through rediscovery. Experience the thrill of the new, grounded in the wisdom of the old.

2022 Bruma del Estrecho, "Finca CQ", Jumilla DO

The Comeback: For decades, Jumilla was known for producing high-alcohol, bulk Monastrell (Mourvèdre). But a new wave of producers is focusing on quality, farming old vines at high altitudes to create wines of surprising freshness and complexity. Bruma del Estrecho is at the forefront of this movement, proving that Jumilla can produce world-class, terroir-driven wines.

Tasting Notes: This 100% Monastrell is rich and powerful, yet beautifully balanced. It offers a deep core of black raspberry, plum, and blackberry fruit, layered with notes of licorice, black pepper, and Mediterranean herbs. Despite its intensity, the wine is lifted by a surprising freshness and fine, well-integrated tannins, a hallmark of high-altitude viticulture.

Food Pairing: A fantastic match for grilled or roasted meats, especially lamb, as well as hearty stews and barbecue.

2021 Bodegas Ordóñez Vatan Tinta de Toro

The Comeback: The Toro region, home to a unique, powerful clone of Tempranillo called Tinta de Toro, has a winemaking history stretching back to Roman times. After phylloxera, it became known for rustic, powerful wines. Today, producers like Bodegas Ordóñez are rediscovering the region's potential for elegance, crafting wines that balance Toro's signature power with newfound finesse.

Tasting Notes: This is a bold, expressive wine that showcases the power of Tinta de Toro. It erupts with aromas of blackberry liqueur, dark chocolate, and sweet spice. The palate is full-bodied and concentrated, with a dense core of black fruit and a firm, tannic structure that leads to a long, lingering finish. A powerhouse of a wine that will reward cellaring.

Food Pairing: Perfect for rich, flavorful dishes like braised short ribs, aged steaks, or a hearty cassoulet.

2016 Tenuta Fessina, il Musmeci Etna Rosso Riserva

The Comeback: The volcanic slopes of Mount Etna are one of the oldest wine regions in the world, but they were largely abandoned for much of the 20th century. Today, Etna is arguably the most exciting wine region in Italy. The late Silvia Maestrelli, founder of Tenuta Fessina, was a true pioneer, one of the first to recognize the potential of these high-altitude, old-vine Nerello Mascalese vineyards.

Tasting Notes: From 70-110 year-old vines, this is a wine of profound complexity and elegance, often compared to fine Burgundy or Barolo. It reveals a mesmerizing array of aromas: dried cherry, blood orange, rose petal, volcanic ash, and exotic spice. The palate is silky and ethereal, with a firm tannic structure and a long, savory, mineral-inflected finish. A truly captivating wine.

Food Pairing: Duck breast with a cherry sauce, mushroom risotto, or aged cheeses.

2023 Tenuta delle Terre Nere, Etna Rosso "San Lorenzo"

The Comeback: We stay on the slopes of Mt. Etna to showcase another legendary producer, Tenuta delle Terre Nere. Marco de Grazia is another key figure in Etna's modern renaissance, and his single-vineyard "cru" bottlings are some of the most sought-after wines in Italy. The "San Lorenzo" vineyard is one of the most historic and revered sites on the volcano.

Tasting Notes: This wine offers a different but equally profound expression of Etna. It is more structured and powerful than the Fessina, with a darker fruit profile of black cherry and plum, complemented by notes of iron, licorice, and crushed rock. The palate is dense and muscular, with a powerful tannic grip that suggests a long and glorious evolution in the cellar. A wine of immense power and potential.

Food Pairing: Bistecca alla Fiorentina, wild boar ragu, or any grand, celebratory meat-based dish that can stand up to its power and structure.
