2020 Roagna, Barolo “Pira”

Rarely does an arrival carry this much weight. The 2020 Roagna releases are officially here, marking a pivotal acquisition for the serious Nebbiolo collector. While many iconic Piedmontese producers are already rolling into their 2022 releases, Roagna remains "as traditional as it gets," holding their wines back to ensure they reach a baseline of maturity before ever leaving the cellar. This patient approach pays dividends in the glass, but it also means our allocation is measured in precious bottles, not cases. For those building a world-class cellar, these are the rare, fleeting quantities that define a collection.

Now under the guidance of Luca Roagna, the family’s lineage in Barbaresco stretches back so far they were crafting wine before glass bottles were the industry standard. Luca has masterfully balanced this "umpteenth-generation" heritage with refined modern precision. While maintaining the signature long macerations that place Roagna in the same breath as legends like Cappellano and Giacomo Conterno, Luca has shifted aging protocols to include time in cement vessels. This evolution preserves the soul of the fruit and the clarity of the terroir, resulting in wines that are extraordinarily age-worthy yet possess a newfound elegance upon release.

Whether you are a seasoned connoisseur or just beginning your journey into the elite tier of Italian wine, this allocation is a must-have. These bottles represent the intersection of history and artisan mastery, but with such limited stock, they will not remain in our cellar for long.

Critical Acclaim:

Wine Spectator, 96 Points:

"This red is like a laser, yet there’s also a sappiness to its texture midpalate, with cherry, cranberry, rose hip, menthol and mineral flavors. Notable for its harmony, complexity and length, with an aftertaste that just keeps coming. Best from 2029 through 2047."

Vinous Media, 95 Points:

" ... a powerful, tightly wound young Barolo. Dried herbs, incense, licorice, tobacco and crushed autumn leaves add layers of nuance. This starts open with a bit of coaxing, suggesting a few years in bottle or a good bit air will do the trick. The tannins are insistent, but also polished."

Kerin O'Keefe, 95 Points:

"Red berry, hay, lavender and dried botanical herb slowly appear on the beautiful 2020 Barolo Pira from Roagna along with a whiff of graphite. Showing extreme class and finesse, the palate features cranberry, tart red cherry, bitter orange, star anise and ground clove before closing on a salty mineral note. Lithe, glossy tannins provide polished support."
