2022 Fratelli Alessandria, Barolo "Gramolere", Monforte d'Alba

Unusually for a Verduno-based estate, Fratelli Alessandria owns a coveted parcel in Gramolere, an iconic MGA located in Monforte d'Alba. This site stands in stark contrast to their home vineyards in Verduno: Monforte is famed for its Diano Sandstone soils rich in iron and clay, yielding Barolos of immense muscularity, firm tannic structure, and deep, dark fruit profiles.

The 2022 "Gramolere" captures this vineyard's serious, broad-shouldered nature. Aged for 30 months in large Slavonian oak casks, it balances dark plum, black cherry, leather, tar, and iron-like minerality. It is the most powerful and structured Barolo in the estate's lineup, built for long-term cellar maturation.

Critical Acclaim:

Jeb Dunnuck Wine Logo

97 Points, Jeb Dunnuck:

"Pouring a slightly deeper ruby color, the 2022 Barolo Gramolere is initially a bit more inward but opens beautifully in the glass. Aromas of grenadine, raspberries, crushed flowers, sweet sage, and fresh earth lead into a palate that is vibrant and electric. Medium-bodied, it shows broader depth and structure in the range, with ripe tannins and a saline, mineral edge that carries through the finish. Notes of blood orange and apricot emerge as it opens, adding further complexity. This special wine has tremendous energy and aging potential. Drink 2027-2045."

Robert Parker Wine Advocate Logo

94 Points, Wine Advocate:

" ... shows greater intensity and depth with aromas of cassis, pencil shaving and lavender essence. Sourced from a higher-elevation vineyard in Monforte d'Alba with calcareous, sandier soils than the estate's holdings in Verduno, this wine delivers more structure, mineral definition and fruit concentration while maintaining an elegant frame. The mouthfeel remains medium-lean but gains momentum with a pleasing interplay of sweet fruit and savory salinity that carries through the finish."

Why You'll Love It

  • Showcases the darker, more muscular side of Barolo from Monforte d'Alba.
  • Deep, complex layers of dark fruit, dried leather, iron, and savory tobacco.
  • High structural integrity and firm tannins give it multi-decade cellaring potential.

How To Serve It

  • Serve at cool room temperature between 60°F and 64°F.
  • We strongly recommend decanting for 1.5 to 2 hours in its youth.
  • Pour into burgundy stems to give the dense aromatics room to open.
  • Pair with braised beef short ribs (brasato al Barolo), roasted game, or aged Parmigiano.
