2024 Gitton Père & Fils, Sancerre "Les Montachins"

Before François and Pascal Cotat, Edmond Vatan (Chavignol), or Didier Dagueneau (Pouilly-Fumé) became household names for single-vineyard Sauvignon Blanc masterpieces, Marcel Gitton was already isolating individual parcels in the 1950s, fiercely bucking the region's obsession with generic bulk blending. If you call yourself a Sancerre purist, this bottle is the bedrock of what you love. It hails from "Les Montachins"—a radical, hyper-steep, 3.68-hectare mount in Ménétréol-sous-Sancerre where 50-year-old vines are forced to split open hard, stony Portlandian limestone. Because the Gitton family refuses to use commercial yeasts or heavy-handed oak, what hits your glass isn't a safe, predictable supermarket Sauvignon Blanc. It is a rare, unblended, laser-focused snapshot of one singular hill that sparked the entire single-site renaissance.

While the famous cult names heavily influenced by Gitton’s blueprint now command triple-digit price tags, the Gitton family quietly keeps this historic bottle incredibly accessible. There are plenty of insipid Sancerre showcased at big-box chains and supermarkets, but for just another $10 to $15, you can have a mineral-infused, laser-focused bottle of the real thing.

Driven by spontaneous native fermentation, the wine opens up with an electric surge of chiseled, steely minerality and cold rainwater hitting crushed rock. The palate is dense, concentrated, and unapologetically tense—packed with piercing citrus oils, wild mountain herbs, and a distinctive, oceanic saline snap that lingers long after the first sip. This is structural, raw Sancerre at its absolute finest.
