There are rare Champagnes, and then there is Salon. The house produces just one wine: a vintage Blanc de Blancs made entirely from Chardonnay grown in the Grand Cru village of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. There is no non-vintage Salon and no second cuvée. If the vintage does not meet the house’s standards, Salon simply is not made. That uncompromising philosophy has turned this tiny Champagne house into one of the most coveted names in the world.
Salon was born from the vision of Eugène-Aimé Salon, who believed that Chardonnay from the chalk soils of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger was capable of producing profound Champagne entirely on its own. At a time when blending grapes, villages, and vintages defined Champagne, his approach was radical. One grape. One Grand Cru village. One vintage. More than a century later, that singular philosophy still defines every bottle of Salon.
The 2002 Salon shows exactly why this approach can produce Champagne of extraordinary longevity. More than two decades after harvest, citrus and orchard fruit still surge through layers of brioche, toasted almond, white flowers, chalk, flint, and saline minerality. There is tremendous depth and power, but the defining quality is tension. Brilliant acidity cuts through the richness and drives an extraordinarily long, precise finish.
Decanter, James Suckling, and Wine Enthusiast have each awarded the 2002 Salon 100 points, and the wine still possesses decades of potential evolution. Salon is produced in tiny quantities even by prestige Champagne standards, and mature bottles from its greatest vintages rarely surface. For a serious Champagne cellar, 2002 Salon is not simply a trophy bottle. It is one of the reference points.
