2023 Frédéric Magnien Vieilles Vignes Nuits Saint Georges

Frédéric Magnien grew up in Morey-Saint-Denis, in a house where Pinot Noir was less a crop than a language spoken from one generation to the next. As the fifth generation of the Magnien clan, he apprenticed in the family’s Michel Magnien vineyards before doing the obligatory grand tour of Burgundy’s elite cellars and a formative stint abroad, then came home with a mission: to bottle Côte de Nuits terroir with as little “makeup” as possible. That’s the genesis of his micro-négociant project—long-term contracts with serious growers, certified-organic parcels, biodynamic sensibility, and a cellar full of used barrels and clay vessels that let place do the talking. In Nuits-Saint-Georges, he zeroed in on old vines on the Vosne-Romanée side, where the village’s famously sinewy structure meets a more perfumed, silky register.

The 2023 Nuits-Saint-Georges Vieilles Vignes is the latest chapter in that story: 50+ year-old Pinot rooted in gravelly, alluvial soils that sit in the cool air corridor of the Meuzin valley, giving fruit with both muscle and lift. Here, Magnien’s gentle, native-yeast fermentations and low-oak élevage don’t try to sand down Nuits’ character so much as refine it—tannins are firm but polished, fruit is vivid rather than jammy, and the signature Nuits earth and iron hum beneath a high-toned, almost Vosne-like bloom of spice and flowers. It’s Burgundy in that sweet spot where artisan farming, thoughtful élevage, and serious terroir all intersect, without the nosebleed pricing of the usual suspects.

Why You'll Love It:

  • Dark-cherry depth and honest structure with savory earth, framed by perfume and finesse rather than brawn.

  • Old vines and organic farming deliver natural concentration—intensity without heaviness, seamless from sip to sapid finish.

  • Vosne’s aromatic lift welded to Nuits’ backbone, punching above its price in the village pantheon.

How To Serve It:

  • Pull the cork 30–60 minutes ahead; gentle decant lets fruit and florals stretch while tannins uncoil.

  • Serve at 55–60°F in a wide Burgundy bowl to unfurl aromatics.

  • Pair with roast lamb, duck breast with cherries, chicken with morels, or hanger steak and wild mushrooms.
