Ridge is an American icon, and today’s release delivers one of the most compelling values we’ve ever offered from this legendary estate. The Lytton Estate is home to old vines dating back to 1901, and in 2022 the fruit was so exceptional that Ridge produced a rare, 100% Petite Sirah bottling—something they only do in standout vintages.
Petite Sirah is naturally dense and tannic, but Ridge has always known how to coax out its inner elegance. The 2022 Lytton Estate is powerful yet refined, packed with blackberry compote, graphite, peppercorn, violets, and that unmistakable Ridge clarity. It’s the kind of wine that routinely outlasts Cabernet in the cellar, gaining nuance and depth over a decade or more. Lytton Springs has long been considered one of California’s “Grand Cru” sites, and this bottling makes the case as clearly as anything Ridge produces.
The history here runs deep: the oldest Petite Sirah vines were planted in 1901, the youngest in 2008, and Ridge first bottled a standalone Petite Sirah from the estate in 2002 as a tiny, limited release. Every vintage since has reinforced the idea that this site is uniquely suited to the variety. In 2022, the combination of old vines, meticulous farming, and a pure varietal expression gives us a wine that is both muscular and beautifully composed—an irresistible combination for collectors and Ridge devotees. Considering Ridge’s iconic status and the singular character of the Lytton Estate, this is one of the smartest cellar plays of the year.
95 Points, Jeb Dunnuck:
“The 2022 Petite Sirah Lytton Estate is made from 100% Petite Sirah from Lytton Estate. The small berries make for a classic, peppery varietal wine that smells like cotton candy and pepper, tart red fruit more than blue, and has great acidity retention. Spicy, broad-shouldered, and softly tannic, it will do well with cellaring. Aged in 15-20% new oak, all American, it presents as quite floral and is supremely balanced and focused. Medium-bodied, the texture stands out, rich and complex in purple fruit. It should drink best from 2028 through 2032.”
94 Points, Decanter Magazine:
“The Petite Sirah comes from the western blocks of Ridge’s Lytton Springs estate in Dry Creek Valley. The 2022 grapes were picked just after an early September heat spike, with temps soaring past 115°F. The Ridge team credits both the site and the variety’s resilience for holding steady in the heat. The result is a dense, concentrated wine, inky in the glass, as you’d expect from Petite Sirah, but not overly heavy. There’s a mix of black raspberry, plum, and earthy-toned dried flowers on the nose, with that signature Ridge oak spice layered in. The palate is lush and mouth-filling, showcasing deep fruit that leans just a touch toward candied notes, with a peppery, spicy finish that lends the wine lift. Still very young – give it a couple of years in bottle.”
