2023 Nathalie Richez, Santenay Rouge

Starting a domaine from scratch in Burgundy is almost impossible. Land is scarce, prices are astronomical, and most vineyards have been passed through the same families for generations. Nathalie Richez inherited none of it. No family estate. No cellar full of old barrels. No famous surname opening doors. Beginning in 2011, she slowly assembled her domaine parcel by parcel, building a 12-hectare estate through persistence, conviction, and a deep love for Burgundy. Today, she farms without chemical herbicides, pesticides, or synthetic shortcuts, and her wines have become some of the most honest expressions of southern Burgundy we've encountered. In a region increasingly dominated by luxury and status, Nathalie's wines remain refreshingly grounded: thoughtful, transparent, and entirely focused on place.

Her 2023 Santenay Rouge captures everything that makes both the grower and the appellation so compelling. Nathalie farms just 1.4 hectares of Pinot Noir spread across three parcels—Les Vaux Dessus, Les Charmes Dessus, and Biévaux—then raises the wine for eighteen months in barrel with just 20% new oak. Native fermentations, low-intervention élevage, and a restrained hand in the cellar allow Santenay's character to come through with remarkable clarity. Long overshadowed by its famous northern neighbors, Santenay remains one of Burgundy's most rewarding sources for value, producing Pinot Noir with the perfume and finesse that draw collectors to Volnay without the accompanying price tag. The warm, generous 2023 vintage suits Nathalie's style beautifully, delivering vibrant red cherry, wild strawberry, cranberry, rose petal, forest floor, and mineral tension wrapped in silky tannins and energetic acidity. This is soulful, unforced Burgundy from a grower who understands that great winemaking often means knowing when to step aside and let the vineyard speak.

Why You'll Love It

  • Built from three tiny Santenay parcels and crafted by one of Burgundy's most compelling self-made vigneronnes.

  • Delivers the transparency, finesse, and site expression that serious Burgundy drinkers chase, without requiring a Volnay-sized budget.

  • Traditional winemaking, native fermentations, restrained oak, and eighteen months of élevage keep the focus squarely on terroir.

How to Serve It

  • Decant for 30-60 minutes while young; the wine gains complexity and texture with air.

  • Serve slightly cool, around 58-62°F, in a Burgundy bowl.

  • Pair with duck confit, roast chicken, grilled pork, mushroom dishes, or aged alpine cheeses that can match its earthiness and structure.
