2022 Olivier Morin, Bourgogne Pinot Noir "Coquette"

Domaine Olivier Morin is a small, family‑run estate in Chitry‑le‑Fort, a village just south of Chablis in the very northern edge of Burgundy. The Morin family has farmed vines in Chitry for generations—records trace them back to at least the 17th century—and the domaine as it exists today was formally established in 1992, when Olivier Morin left a career in radio and music to take over the family vineyards. Today he works with his wife Nelly, farming roughly 12–14 hectares of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay on the same Kimmeridgian and Portlandian limestone soils that define neighboring Chablis, but with a distinctly Burgundian, Pinot‑focused twist.

The 2022 “Coquette” is 100% Pinot Noir sourced from a special selection of fruit across the domaine’s Chitry vineyards and nearby sites, mostly on south‑ to southeast‑facing slopes with marl, clay, and Portlandian limestone soils similar to those of Chablis. The vines average 30–50 years of age. The 2022 vintage in this part of Burgundy was warm and generous, and “Coquette” reflects that: ripe, juicy cherries, raspberries, red currant, and light spice, with a bright, lifted and lithe wine. The wine is aged in older demi‑muids in a solera‑style system, so a small portion of older vintages is blended in each year, adding subtle complexity and a touch of savory depth to the otherwise fruit‑forward style.

Why you’ll love it

  • Classic, drink‑now Pinot: Bright red fruits, soft tannins, and a mineral spine make this an ideal “house Burgundy” that overdelivers for the appellation.

  • Terroir‑driven value: From Kimmeridgian‑style soils just south of Chablis, at a price that undercuts most village Burgundy.

  • Winemaker’s touch: Olivier Morin’s use of native yeasts, older oak, and a solera‑style blend gives “Coquette” more complexity than many simple Bourgogne Pinots.

How to serve it

  • Temperature & glass: Serve around 55–60°F in a Burgundy stem to let the fruit and spice open up.

  • Food pairings: Roast chicken, duck confit, charcuterie, mushroom risotto, or simple pasta with butter and herbs all work beautifully.

  • Drink or hold: Enjoy now for its juicy, aromatic charm; it will also drink well for 5–8 years as the tannins soften and tertiary notes develop.
