2022 Kappa Winery Kokkymelo Xinomavro

Kappa Winery is part of the new wave reshaping Naoussa—Greece’s historic homeland of Xinomavro—by focusing on high-altitude vineyards, lower yields, and precision-driven winemaking that highlights purity over power. Founded by agronomist/winemaker Tassos Karagiozidis and partner Eleni Charalambaki, the winery farms its own small collection of hillside plots on the slopes of Mount Vermio in Imathia. Their approach blends technical rigor with a deep respect for Naoussa’s traditions: native varieties, handwork in the vines, and minimal manipulation in the cellar. Production is tiny, philosophy is terroir-first, and the results slot firmly into the “modern classic” category—structured enough for Greek wine lovers, but polished and lifted enough to appeal to Burgundy and Nebbiolo drinkers.

Their flagship wine, “Kokkymelo,” comes from a single high-elevation vineyard in the Fytia sector—one of Naoussa’s coolest, most aromatic zones. Here, Xinomavro ripens slowly, retaining its signature high acidity and red-fruited clarity while achieving full phenolic maturity. The 2022 showcases the grape’s dual nature: it carries Naoussa’s traditional backbone of fine, firm tannins, but tempers it with juicy red and black fruit, spice, and a freshness that marks the best modern expressions. It’s expressive, structured yet approachable, and exceptionally food-friendly. No wonder it caught the eye of Eleven Madison Park, who pour it by the glass at $29—further proof this is the real deal.

Why You'll Love It

  • A Michelin-approved gem: Poured by the glass at Eleven Madison Park for $29—your bottle costs the same when you buy 6+.

  • Modern Xinomavro at its finest: High-altitude fruit, clean precision, and a delicious mix of red fruit, spice, and fine tannin.

  • Single-vineyard purity: Sourced entirely from the cool Fytia hillsides, showcasing lift, energy, and terroir-driven character.

How To Serve It

  • Decant 30–45 minutes to let the aromatics blossom and soften Xinomavro’s signature tannins.

  • Serve at 58–62°F in Burgundy stems to emphasize perfume and texture.

  • Pair with roasted meats, tomato-based dishes, mushrooms, or aged cheeses—the wine’s acidity and structure make it a natural match.
