2023 Domaine Chanson, Beaune 1er Cru "Clos du Roi"
In today’s Burgundy landscape—where tariffs and currency shifts have made value harder to find—knowing your producers is everything. And when it comes to Premier Cru gems that consistently overdeliver, few rival the pedigree and precision of Domaine Chanson. Founded in 1750, Chanson is one of only six producers in Burgundy still standing from the 18th century, with over 111 acres of exclusively Premier and Grand Cru vineyards, including 62 acres in the Côte de Beaune. Their organic farming, meticulous vinification, and deep holdings in Beaune make them a true specialist of the appellation—second only to the Hospices de Beaune.
The 2023 Beaune 1er Cru “Clos du Roi” Rouge, a wine of royal lineage and quiet power. Located just below Les Marconnets on a fold in the hill, this vineyard was once owned by the Dukes of Burgundy and annexed by King Louis XI. Chanson owns 35% of the climat and farms it with precision. With a south-east exposure, the Pinot Noir here ripens beautifully, producing wines of delicate florals, red currant, spice, and tight texture. It’s a Premier Cru that regularly draws comparisons to Grand Cru sites for its finesse and aging potential.
