2023 Domaine Chanson, Beaune 1er Cru "Clos des Mouches" Rouge
In today’s Burgundy landscape—where tariffs and currency shifts have made value harder to find—knowing your producers is everything. And when it comes to Premier Cru gems that consistently overdeliver, few rival the pedigree and precision of Domaine Chanson. Founded in 1750, Chanson is one of only six producers in Burgundy still standing from the 18th century, with over 111 acres of exclusively Premier and Grand Cru vineyards, including 62 acres in the Côte de Beaune. Their organic farming, meticulous vinification, and deep holdings in Beaune make them a true specialist of the appellation—second only to the Hospices de Beaune.
The 2023 Beaune 1er Cru “Clos des Mouches” Rouge ($145). Sourced from a 4.5-hectare vineyard on a spur pointing toward Pommard, this wine is often called a “Grand Cru in disguise.” With its sandy soils over limestone and Chanson’s major ownership stake, Clos des Mouches delivers a wine of serious pedigree. Expect aromas of black cherry, preserved plum, forest floor, rose petal, and vintage leather, with structured tannins and a mineral-tinged finish that lingers. In top vintages, it can stand toe-to-toe with Corton-Bressandes, while shaving 15–20% off the sticker price.
