The Champagne Hall of Fame

Four Extraordinary Vintages. Four Remarkable Houses. One Legendary Champagne Collection.

Champagne has no shortage of celebrated names, but true greatness is measured by more than reputation alone. It is found in exceptional vineyards, extraordinary vintages, generations of winemaking expertise, and the remarkable ability to transform Chardonnay and Pinot Noir into wines of incredible complexity, precision, and longevity. The finest Champagnes transcend celebration, earning their place alongside the world's greatest wines through their depth, individuality, and capacity to evolve over decades. These are the qualities that distinguish a truly exceptional Champagne, and the inspiration behind our Champagne Hall of Fame.

For this extraordinary four-bottle collection, our SommSelect team has brought together four remarkable expressions of Champagne at its finest, spanning a decade of outstanding vintages from 2008 to 2018. From one of the most celebrated prestige cuvées ever produced to an extraordinarily rare, single-vineyard Grand Cru, each bottle tells a different story of what makes this region so special. Historic houses meet exceptional grower craftsmanship, while extended aging, distinctive terroirs, and uncompromising winemaking reveal the extraordinary diversity behind the world's most celebrated sparkling wine. Four producers, four vintages, and four compelling reasons why Champagne remains in a class of its own.

2008 Dom Pérignon Brut Champagne

There are great vintages of Dom Pérignon, and then there is 2008. Widely regarded as one of Champagne's defining vintages of the modern era, 2008 delivered an extraordinary combination of concentration, precision, and aging potential. Its significance was apparent long before the wine reached collectors. In an unprecedented decision, Dom Pérignon released the more immediately approachable 2009 before the 2008, allowing the latter additional time to develop in the cellar. For a house whose reputation rests on producing only vintage Champagne, the decision spoke volumes about the exceptional potential of the harvest. Nearly two decades later, the 2008 has earned its place among the great releases in Dom Pérignon's history.

Today, the wine is beginning to reveal the rewards of that patience. White flowers, ripe citrus, and stone fruit mingle with toasted brioche, roasted almond, delicate spice, and smoky mineral undertones. The palate combines remarkable concentration with an almost weightless elegance, supported by the brilliant acidity that has defined this vintage from the beginning. With age, its youthful intensity is developing greater richness and complexity without sacrificing the freshness that promises decades of further evolution. A benchmark vintage from one of Champagne's most celebrated prestige cuvées, the 2008 Dom Pérignon is a natural first inductee into our Champagne Hall of Fame.

2012 Champagne Jean Vesselle, “Le Petit Clos” Grand Cru Extra Brut, Bouzy

In a region celebrated for its legendary houses and prestigious vineyards, few Champagnes can claim a story quite like Jean Vesselle's “Le Petit Clos.” Produced from an extraordinary 0.08-hectare walled vineyard in the Grand Cru village of Bouzy, this remarkable Blanc de Noirs comes from a parcel scarcely larger than a generous backyard. Planted in 1968, its old Pinot Noir vines occupy one of Champagne's most celebrated villages for the variety, where powerful, deeply concentrated wines have earned an international reputation. For perspective, this tiny vineyard is nearly nine times smaller than Krug's legendary Clos d'Ambonnay, a Champagne that commands several thousand dollars per bottle. Yet Le Petit Clos offers its own extraordinary expression of Grand Cru Pinot Noir, crafted on a scale that makes every vintage inherently scarce. This is rarity defined not by marketing, but by the vineyard itself.

The exceptional 2012 vintage gives this singular wine even greater significance. Fermented and matured entirely in seasoned French oak barrels, Le Petit Clos possesses the depth, texture, and vinous complexity that distinguish Champagne's most compelling single-vineyard bottlings. Baked red apple, dried fig, roasted hazelnut, toasted brioche, and delicate woodsmoke unfold across a remarkably concentrated palate, balanced by vibrant acidity and a long, chalk-driven finish. More than a decade after harvest, its richness is developing beautifully, revealing a Champagne that deserves to be approached with the same attention as a great bottle of Burgundy. From one of Champagne's smallest walled vineyards comes a wine of extraordinary character, proving that greatness is not measured by the size of an estate, but by the distinction of its terroir.

2015 Champagne Billecart-Salmon, “Cuvée Nicolas François” Extra Brut

Few Champagne houses embody the marriage of heritage and refinement quite like Billecart-Salmon. Founded in 1818 through the marriage of Nicolas François Billecart and Elisabeth Salmon, the house has remained in family hands for more than two centuries, establishing an extraordinary reputation for elegance, precision, and uncompromising craftsmanship. In 1964, the family created Cuvée Nicolas François as a tribute to its founder, bringing together exceptional Pinot Noir from the Montagne de Reims and Grande Vallée de la Marne with distinguished Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs. But the cuvée's reputation extends far beyond its pedigree. In a landmark blind tasting held in 1999, the 1959 Nicolas François was named Champagne of the Millennium, with the house's 1961 vintage finishing second. Two extraordinary performances against some of Champagne's most legendary bottles, cementing the cuvée's place among the region's great prestige wines.

The 2015 vintage offers a particularly expressive interpretation of this historic cuvée. An exceptionally warm, dry growing season produced concentrated fruit, giving the wine generous depth while preserving the finesse that defines Billecart-Salmon's signature style. Partial fermentation in traditional oak barrels adds subtle complexity, while extended maturation on the lees develops remarkable texture and aromatic richness. Layers of ripe orchard fruit, mandarin, baked apple, toasted brioche, roasted almond, and delicate spice unfold across a beautifully composed palate, supported by fine bubbles, vibrant citrus, and a persistent chalky finish. Awarded 95 points by both James Suckling and Vinous, the 2015 demonstrates how the finest prestige cuvées balance power with restraint. A Champagne shaped by more than two centuries of family tradition, and a worthy representative of the extraordinary craftsmanship that defines Champagne's most prestigious houses.

2018 Champagne Bollinger, “La Grande Année” Brut

Few Champagne houses have achieved the cultural recognition of Bollinger. Founded in 1829, the historic house has become synonymous with exceptional craftsmanship, uncompromising tradition, and an unmistakably rich, vinous style. Its longstanding association with James Bond has introduced the name to generations of admirers, but Bollinger's reputation among serious collectors rests on something far more substantial: an extraordinary commitment to traditional Champagne winemaking. Nowhere is that philosophy more evident than in La Grande Année, the house's celebrated vintage cuvée, produced only in exceptional years. While much of Champagne has embraced stainless steel, Bollinger continues to ferment every component of La Grande Année in seasoned oak barrels, preserving a centuries-old approach that brings remarkable texture, complexity, and depth. An icon both inside and outside the wine world, Bollinger has earned its reputation by remaining unmistakably itself.

The vintage offers a magnificent expression of that philosophy. Composed of 66% Pinot Noir and 34% Chardonnay from 19 Grand and Premier Cru villages, the wine draws its Pinot Noir primarily from Verzenay, Aÿ, and Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, with Chardonnay from celebrated Côte des Blancs villages including Chouilly and Cuis. Following barrel fermentation, extended maturation on the lees under natural cork, and meticulous hand-riddling and disgorgement, the 2018 reveals layers of golden apple, ripe peach, toasted almond, acacia honey, brioche, and delicate citrus. Its generous, creamy texture is balanced by vibrant freshness and a persistent mineral finish, capturing both the warmth of the vintage and Bollinger's distinctive structural precision. Rich, refined, and unmistakably Bollinger, La Grande Année is a fitting final inductee into our Champagne Hall of Fame, representing one of the world's most celebrated Champagne houses at its finest.
