2023 Antonio Madeira, Vinhas Velhas Branco, Dão

The Dão is producing some of the most alluring white wines on the planet—and Antonio Madeira is the poster child for this revolution. For years, the wine world has looked to the Northern Hemisphere’s storied limestone slopes for chiseled, age-worthy whites, but this SommSelect Travel Discovery proves that Portugal’s ancient granite highlands are the new frontier for white wine purists. Born and trained in France but driven by his ancestral roots, Antonio Madeira has spent over a decade identifying the "Grands Crus" of the Dão’s Serra da Estrela foothills. This is a serious, intellectual white that demands the same respect as a top-tier Meursault, offering a thrilling bridge between old-world tradition and modern precision.

The secret to this wine’s profound depth lies in the soil and the clock. Madeira works with massive granitic outcrops and centenarian field blends—some vines exceeding 100 years in age—which yield a wine of incredible structural integrity and "chiseled" minerality. On the palate, it strikes a rare balance of power and grace: expect a core of orchard fruit and citrus pith wrapped in a reductive, flinty tension, finishing with a creamy, saline texture that lingers for minutes. With a stellar 94+ point rating from the Wine Advocate, this is a bottle that possesses the richness and longevity of White Burgundy, yet remains fundamentally defined by the rugged, high-altitude soul of the Dão.

What makes Antonio’s approach so unique is his "French perspective" on Portuguese terroir. Eschewing the industrialized methods that once dominated the region, he treats his 23 distinct parcels with the obsessive care of a Burgundian vigneron. Every grape is farmed organically with biodynamic treatments, fermented spontaneously with native yeasts, and bottled with only a minimal dose of sulfur. These are field blends in the truest sense—native varieties harvested together to capture the authentic voice of the vineyard. The result is a wine that defies expectations, delivering a level of purity and "expectation-defying" energy that has sent shock waves through our office.

For those who seek out native old-vine wonders, now is the time to hop on the train before the rest of the world catches up. We have secured the best price on the market for a 3-bottle buy-in, making it easier than ever to cellar a few and watch them transform over the next decade. Directly sourced and vetted by our team on the ground, this is a blue-chip acquisition for any collector looking to stay ahead of the curve. Don't miss out on what is arguably the most exciting white wine discovery to come out of Portugal this year.

Critical Acclaim:

Wine Advocate 94+ points:

  • The old-vine white 2023 Vinhas Velhas Branco keeps the quality level of the exceptional 2021 I tasted last year. Like it, this was produced with the fruit from 15 small plots of old vines between 50 and 130 years of age and planted with a myriad of old varieties—Síria, Bical, Fernão Pires, Encruzado, Arinto, Cerceal and Malvasia Fina—on slopes with granite soils that they work biodynamically, but the wine is not certified. It's inspired by the natural vinification of some Burgundy wines and fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in 500-liter barrels for 12 months and the next winter in stainless steel. It displays a bright and deep golden color and a nuanced and complex nose, with notes of wildflowers and herbs, vibrant and expressive. It has good ripeness and 13.2% alcohol, with a pH of 3.51 and 5.45 grams of acidity. It has great energy and is nuanced, complex and elegant with a tasty palate and a saline and faintly bitter finish. 6,800 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2025.
