2022 Albert Joly, Puligny-Montrachet "Les Reuchaux"

While the "superstar" names of Puligny-Montrachet often command prices that defy logic, Domaine Albert Joly remains one of the village's most compelling secrets. This tiny, 11-acre family estate—now spearheaded by Sylvie Prevot-Joly, who took the reins from her father in 2007—is a study in under-the-radar precision. We are thrilled to announce that SommSelect holds the exclusive US allocation for this single-site Puligny. Despite their deep roots in the village, the family still sells roughly 80% of their fruit to top-tier négociants, leaving only a precious few barrels to be bottled under the Joly label. What sets them apart is one of the few true underground cellars in Puligny; because of the village's high water table, most aging happens above ground, but Joly’s cold, subterranean cave allows for a slow, reductive fermentation that imparts the vivid, high-toned minerality and chiseled floral elegance that defines world-class Puligny-Montrachet.

This release is a rare opportunity to secure a "pre-tariff" value from a vintage that collectors are already hailing for its transparency and energy. Sourced from 40-to-60-year-old vines, this wine offers a glistening, saline-driven profile with a nutty, almond-toned depth. This commitment to ancient vines translates directly into the quality of this "Les Reuchaux" cuvée, which offers the pedigree of a Premier Cru at a fraction of the cost. Given the incredibly small production, this is a "buy-by-the-case" vintage for the serious Burgundy cellar.

The "Les Reuchaux" vineyard is a fascinating lieu-dit situated on the northern edge of Puligny, sitting just below the Premier Cru belt. This specific site is defined by its stony, compact limestone and white-marl soils, which yield a "pure Puligny" profile characterized by chiseled minerality and high-toned tension. The 2022 growing season provided enough warmth to flesh out the mid-palate with golden orchard fruit, but the "Les Reuchaux" terroir ensures a laser-like backbone of acidity and a distinctive "crushed rock" finish that anchors the wine firmly in the Côte de Beaune’s most prestigious white wine village.

Tasting Note:

  • In the glass, the 2022 "Les Reuchaux" displays a brilliant pale gold hue with shimmering green reflections. The nose is an evocative masterclass in controlled reduction—think struck match and flint—layered over blossoming acacia, lemon verbena, and white peach. On the palate, the wine is compact and vibrant, showing "yoga-like power" where the density of old vines meets a bracing, saline mineral core. Notes of yellow plum and toasted hazelnut emerge on the mid-palate, but the finish is all about precision: a long, zesty, and intensely chalky tail that leaves a lingering impression of crystalline purity. Drink now with a 20-minute decant, or cellar through 2035 to watch the reductive notes evolve into a complex, honeyed opulence.
