This is the Holy Grail of Galicia. While the world has long looked to Rías Baixas for aromatic Albariño, the true connoisseurs have turned their gaze inland to the sheer, slate-laden riverbanks of Ribeira Sacra. To understand this region, simply put the Mosel Valley in Spain: imagine dizzying 60-degree gradients where "Heroic Viticulture" isn’t a marketing buzzword, but a daily requirement. Here, among ancient stone terraces, Adega Algueira winery is forging a legendary cult status. By rescuing nearly extinct native varieties and farming them with obsessive detail, they have created a wine that doesn’t just compete with the world’s elite—it often surpasses them.
The 2021 “Dolio” is a unique masterpiece that centers on Mencía but finds its soul in its "kissing cousin" native field blends: Sousón, Brancellao, Merenzao, and Caíño. For the dedicated Francophile, this effort echoes the ethereal weight of Grand Cru Burgundy mixed with the haunting, graphite-etched soul of old-vine Cabernet Franc from the village of Chinon. The depth, minerality, and spice found here are rarely encountered in the riper, more muscular realms of Rioja, Ribera del Duero, or Priorat. It is a hauntingly beautiful expression of place that captures the raw, tectonic power of the Sil River.

The international press has officially sounded the alarm on this cult-in-the-making, with scores that place Algueira at the very top of the global hierarchy. James Suckling awarded this vintage a staggering 98 points, calling it "wonderfully complex" with "incisive energy" and "ethereal fruit." Not to be outdone, Luis Gutiérrez of Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate bestowed a 95-point rating, noting the wine’s incredible ability to open up and its potential for immense longevity. These aren’t just high marks for Spain; these are world-class accolades for a winery that has become the centerpiece of the "New Spain" movement.
The 2021 Dolio explodes with an alluring bouquet of crushed black cherries, violets, and cracked white pepper. The palate is a thrill ride of tension and texture; streaks of salty slate and wild scrubland herbs weave through a core of vibrant red fruit and a savory, "Franc-like" earthiness. It is lithe, spicy, and hauntingly long, finishing with a mineral grip that begs for another sip. Absolutely riveting.
For those who prioritize terroir over labels, the Dolio is an essential acquisition. It represents the pinnacle of what is possible when ancient vines meet a visionary producer. This is a wine of "nervy" brilliance—structured by fine-grained tannins and a deep, slate-driven core that vibrates on the palate. With only a few thousand bottles produced, this is a rare opportunity to own a benchmark bottle from a producer that is currently redefining the limits of Atlantic reds.

Critical Acclaim:
98 Points, James Suckling:

“This shows a wonderfully complex nose of dried herbs and wild berries. The medium- to full-bodied palate is elegant and bright, with focused, precise tannins and incisive energy. There’s a sense of overall balance, with ethereal, nervy fruit that gives the wine both lift and depth. A blend of 45% mencia from Carballocobo, 25% souson, 15% brancellao, 7% merenzao, and a touch of caino. Drink or hold.”
95 Points, Decanter:

“Sweet cherries with dried plums and incense and ash. Lovely clarity and focus on the palate, this has a lifted frame with savoury edged balsamic strawberries and wet stones. Clearly very mineral. Mouthwatering acidity gives the lift with so much salty salinity around. Sea breeze. A lovely effortless take, so easy to drink and like. Ends crisp with salty stones in the mouth. Perfectly balanced and interesting. 3.7-hectare vineyard. Owner and winemaker Fernando González Riveiro.”

“The 2021 Dolio is the third vintage of a cuvée of 45% Mencía, 25% Sousón, 15% Brancellao, 7.5% Merenzao and 7.5% Caíño selected from two of their vineyards, Carballocobo and Cortezada, with each grape providing something and the blend of all is better than each separately. The full clusters were foot trodden and fermented in a tronconic oak vat, and part of the destemmed grapes was added and fermented together with indigenous yeasts and matured in 225-liter barrels and 2,000-liter foudres for 23 months. It has lower alcohol than previous years; in 2021, it's only 13% (a full 1% less than 2022), keeping a pH of 3.4 and 5.7 grams of acidity. I kept it in the glass for a long time, and the wine opened up beautifully.”
