2020 Mas Martinet, Priorat "Clos Martinet"

When Josep Lluís Pérez arrived in Gratallops in 1981, his vision ignited the revolution that resurrected a forgotten region into one of Spain’s two prestigious DOQ appellations. Today, his daughter Sara Pérez leads Mas Martinet, refining this benchmark history through organic farming and ancestral techniques. Sourced from 40-year-old vines rooted in iconic llicorella slate soils, the 2020 Mas Martinet "Clos Martinet" is aged across an artisanal array of vessels—cement tanks, clay amphorae, large wooden foudres, glass demijohns, and French oak. While Priorat is often overshadowed by Rioja and Ribera del Duero, the searing minerality and chiseled focus of Clos Martinet leave those traditional regions far in the rearview mirror.

Due to a challenging growing season, the 2020 vintage yielded an atypical, higher percentage of Syrah (40%) alongside Garnatxa, Carinyena and a drop of Cabernet Sauvignon. The result is easily one of the most satisfying, complete Syrah-driven blends anywhere in the world—yet it remains unmistakably Catalan at its heart, radiating coastal Mediterranean soul and deep mountain energy. Wine Advocate’s Luis Gutiérrez rewarded this singular vintage with a soaring 97 points, noting that despite its depth, the wine feels light and has light.

In the glass, it reveals a dark ruby core with aromas of ripe red cherry, sweet baking spice, dark chocolate, dried flowers, and balsamic Mediterranean garrigue. The palate is fleshy and powerful yet exceptionally refined, weaving savory dark fruit around a vibrant, slate-driven mineral backbone that drives through an endless, spice-dusted finish. It stands as a compelling acquisition for collectors of chiseled Spanish blends, Northern Rhône Syrahs, and Châteauneuf-du-Pape alike.

97 Points, Wine Advocate:

“As with many other wines, I had two vintages to taste of their flagship red, which is always interesting, but one vintage tends to suffer in the comparison. In this case, the 2020 Clos Martinet played with a disadvantage, as the year was challenging, with unusual rain and fungus problems, almost unheard of in Priorat. This is a completely atypical wine, with more Syrah (40%, when it's usually 18%...) than Garnacha. They focused very much on saving this vineyard and were able to make a volume of wine (but 50% less than the potential of the vineyard). This is a lot lighter; the wine has 14% alcohol but feels light... It feels light and HAS light.”

Why You'll Love It

  • The Pioneer's Legacy: Sourced from 40-year-old vines in Gratallops slate soils, this benchmark estate ignited Priorat's modern renaissance and remains a gold standard for authentic Catalan terroir.

  • A Rare Syrah-Driven Masterpiece: A singular 2020 blend led by 40% Syrah, offering a world-class bridge between Northern Rhône structure, Châteauneuf-du-Pape complexity, and Mediterranean soul.

  • Artisanal Micro-Vinification: Crafted by visionary winemaker Sara Pérez, aged across an intricate array of cement, clay amphorae, wooden foudres, glass demijohns, and French oak for weightless 97-point precision.

How To Serve It

  • Decant: 45 to 60 minutes prior to serving to unlock its dark fruit layers, sweet spices, and balsamics.

  • Temperature: Serve at 60°F–64°F (15°C–18°C) in a broad Bordeaux or large Syrah glass.

  • Food Pairing: Partners magnificently with roasted rack of lamb, slow-braised beef short ribs, wild game, or charcoal-grilled meats.

Mas Martinet, Priorat "Clos Martinet"

One of the Wines That Built Modern Priorat: Josep Lluís Pérez was among the small group of pioneering winemakers who transformed Priorat beginning in the 1980s. Clos Martinet emerged from that movement, making it not simply one of the region’s benchmark wines, but part of the foundation of modern Priorat itself.
