David & Nadia, “Elpidios” Swartland Red

David and Nadia Sadie craft a range of organically grown, naturally made wines in the Swartland region of South Africa, a large district just north of Stellenbosch along the Atlantic Coast. This silky and finessed red blend channels the greatest wines of the Languedoc and Southern Rhône, combining Carignan, Syrah, Cinsault, Grenache, and the South African specialty Pinotage. The Sadies incorporate whole grape bunches (about 50%) into their fermentations and subject the wine to a lengthy aging period in large, used barrels, then bottle, before release. Violet-scented and juicy, with hints of pepper, lavender, black raspberry and currants, this is an off-the-beaten-track beauty to pair with roast lamb or duck.

Swartland

South Africa’s magnificent Western Cape, and specifically the Swartland appellation, is another rich mosaic of soil types, including sands of decomposed granite from the nearby Paardeberg Mountains. Dramatic day-night temperature swings in the region help preserve acidity and
moderate alcohol.
