Torbreck, The Steading, Red Blend

You don’t have to look far to see that Torbreck garners some of the greatest critical acclaim of any producer in Australia – and for good reason. Torbreck Vintners was created by former lumberjack, David Powell, who set out to craft world-class wines from historic, old vineyards in the Barossa Valley. He share-farmed at the start and purchased many of the parcels over the years to comprise what is a meticulously curated estate today. In 2008, David sold Torbreck to Pete Knight, who has continued to nurture the treasured vineyards and their heirloom vines as well as craft traditional, honest wines, under head winemaker, Craig Isbel.

Like fine Southern Rhone red wines, Torbreck’s Steading is greater than the sum of its parts. A blend of 66% Grenache, 21% Mataro (down-under synonym for Mourvedre) and 13% Shiraz, this red wine is the product of one of the greatest vintages in decades as well as lineage in the vines that reaches back over a century and boasts its original pre-phylloxera rootstock. Each unique block is picked at optimal ripeness at various stages then is de-stemmed separately into wooden as well as concrete open-top tanks where the juice is fermented, and the wine is gently pumped over twice a day for roughly one week. The wine is basket-pressed into older French Hogsheads, which are significantly larger than barriques or Burgundian barrels. This allows a purer varietal expression and a unique sense of place to shine through in the wine. In barrel, it naturally goes through malolactic fermentation and ages on its fine lees for 24 months. The wine is then bottled without fining or filtration. The result represents one of the most profound and honest expressions of the Barossa Valley on the market.

The 2012 Steading displays a saturated, dark crimson core that moves to slight orange reflections on the rim. Powerful, concentrated and complex aromas of black raspberry, kirsch liqueur, and stewed strawberry are intertwined with aromatics of eucalyptus, underbrush, cacao, mint, wild herbs, a touch of wet tobacco and a fragrant, exotic floral perfume. The full-bodied, dense and mouth-coating palate is pitch-perfect, far from overbearing, and is matched by the perfect balance of freshness and soft, polished tannins that evolve into a long, exotic silken finish that lingers. This wine merely needs a 20-30 minute decant, but service temperature is key due to the slightly higher alcohol content. To experience the full aromatic display, serve just a few degrees above cellar temperature in large Bordeaux stems alongside this Braised Lamb with Mint and Flageolet Beans.

Southern Australia

Eden Valley

Eden Valley is immediately east of Barossa, but its vineyards climb to altitudes that can exceed 500 meters in some places, resulting in much cooler growing conditions. This is critical for preserving acidity in white grapes, and the traditional style of Eden/Clare Valley Riesling is high in acidity and bone-dry, to put it mildly.

Western Australia

Margaret River

The coastal vineyards of Margaret River, cooled by Indian Ocean currents, are known for Chardonnays with plenty of acidity to match their deep fruit concentration. They are intensely citrusy in character, somewhere between Burgundian and Californian in style, and consistently show well in blind tastings when mixed in with French and American renditions.

Southern Australia

Coonawarra

Much like Margaret River to the west, Coonawarra is often compared to Bordeaux because of its proximity to the Southern Ocean, but there’s a critical difference—the distinctive terra rossa soils of Coonawarra, a mix of clay/loam that is rich in iron oxide over a limestone base.
