As summer heats up and we forsake our dining room for the outdoor patio table, there is one red wine we yearn to drink all season long – Cru Beaujolais.
If you read our offers, you know the Morgon appellation is arguably the best of the Crus. Over a century ago, the reds of Morgon often out-priced Domaine de la Romanée-Conti on Parisian wine lists. On the current market, they represent the greatest value for quality red wine in the world. Sommeliers around the world drink these wines at their dinner tables because of the incredible value. Domaine Daniel Bouland is, without question, a top producer of the region and his wines are on par with the famous names of Lapierre and Foillard. The 2014 Schiste Bellevue, derived from a special parcel of 60-year-old vines rooted in unique schist and pink granite soils, delivers a perfect expression of place. If you have yet to amass a stash of great Cru Beaujolais in your cellar, now is the perfect time.
Daniel Bouland is a traditionalist in the purest sense. His six-hectares of the old family estate is located in the Corcelette hamlet of Beaujolais’ Morgon where his vines are rooted in unique pink granite and schist soils. This Bellevue parcel has a heavy dose of rare schist along with the granite and the sustainably farmed vines are 60 years old, which makes for ample concentration in each pristine berry. Bouland hand tends his vines without the use of a tractor and all the work is done manually by Bouland, his daughter, and one seasonal technician. Common sense and hard work inevitably results in grapes of the finest caliber, which is crafted into wine as it was in Beaujolais’ glory days.
In the cellar, Bouland crafts his wines without thermos and utilizes only natural yeast for fermentation. Each wine is individually crafted with whole clusters to exemplify the best the vintage and specific site has to offer for a terroir-driven beauty that is worthy of Beaujolais’ ancient, celebrated roots. Few master winemakers in Beaujolais craft an old-fashioned expression of this elegance and class. In short, this wine delivers the value and quality that we strive to bring you here at SommSelect.
The 2014 Morgon Schiste Bellevue displays a dark ruby red core with pink highlights on the rim. The beautifully perfumed aromatics reveal freshly picked blueberry, blueberry, cranberry and wild strawberry laced with a field of wild rose, violets, lavender and herbs over aromas of wet forest floor, grape stems, crushed granite and exotic spices in complex aromas that are difficult even to translate into words. The texture of this wine is beautifully rich without being fruit-forward. The dense palate is perfectly balanced by refreshing acidity and focused minerality that slowly evolves to include layers of blue and red fruits, nuanced herbs, flowers, and spices as well as granitic minerality that inspires you to drink glass after glass, and the long, satisfying finish lingers in your senses. To enjoy, decant for 30 minutes then serve in large Burgundy stems at about 60-65 degrees. This wine is drinking beautifully now, but for those of you who have the self-control, try to put some bottles away for 3-5 more years as the wine will age like fine Red Burgundy. One of the all-time greatest dishes to pair with Cru Beaujolais is
Zuni Chicken. If you have never prepared it this is your chance. Follow this recipe as closely as possible for best results.
