This stunning white Burgundy from Domaine Parisse evokes memories of top examples of Puligny-Montrachet at a price tag that belies the immense quality found in the bottle.
With beautiful aromatic tension from a precise combination of perfect freshness, minerality and floral perfume, this 2012 lieu-dit, Les Longeays, from the lesser-known Burgundian appellation of Pouilly-Vinzelles, delivers a highly addictive wine that will prompt you to seek glass after glass. Less than an hour south of Puligny-Montrachet, this special pocket of limestone soil and unique terroir is crafted through thoughtful, natural winemaking into a world-class Chardonnay. For those of you on an everlasting hunt for great white Burgundy at a tremendous value, this offer is for you.
The family-owned Domaine Thibert Père et Fils is located in the small village of Fuissé in the heart of the Mâconnais. Although this wine is labeled as Domaine Parisse for the US market, it is produced by Domaine Thibert and is identical to their Les Longeays produced under that label. With seven generations of vignerons in the family, the domaine is now run by husband and wife team, Christophe and Catherine Thibert, along with Christophe’s sister Sandrine. Over Christophe’s two-and-a-half-decade tenure he has converted the family enterprise from bulk production to artisanal, hand-bottled fine wine production. Their 22 hectares are kept to extremely low yields and are predominantly farmed with uncertified organic practices, although a minimal amount of traditional spray is used early in the season. The resulting fruit is pristine and simply teeming with life when it reaches the cellar.
We love white Burgundy here at SommSelect, but demand for the most famous villages have driven prices to a point where value is increasingly difficult to come by. Thankfully, there are lesser-known pockets of Burgundy that deliver the signature perfume and minerality of the more famous villages at a price point we can all afford. Such is the case with today’s stunning single-vineyard example. Derived from the prized lieu-dit, Les Longeays, in the lesser-known appellation of Pouilly-Vinzelles, this magnificent example of terroir boasts limestone minerality and an elegant expression akin to a great Puligny-Montrachet. The Thiberts’ clean and reductive style of winemaking results in a bright, pure wine that eschews oxidative influences and delivers a wine of impeccable freshness and purity. The wine is aged in 100% small oak barrels, only 4% of which are new, and filtration is quite minimal. According to Christophe, “I want to produce wines where I can smell the fruit, the terroir and the minerality, so I am careful with new oak.” The result shows ample purity, focused minerality and a profound sense of place in the glass.
The 2012 Les Longeays displays a pale golden straw core with green reflections on the rim. The pure and floral nose is slightly reductive and boasts aromas of yellow apple core, fresh acacia, lime blossom, lemon curd over focused wet limestone and just a kiss of vanilla bean and well-integrated baking spices in the background. The medium-bodied palate captures a beautiful creaminess and density that is brought into perfect harmony by almost high acid and precise minerality from the expressive limestone soils. To enjoy, simply decant for 20-30 minutes in Burgundy stems between 50-60 degrees, depending on your personal preference. Serve with
