Alpha Estate, Hedgehog Vineyard, Xinomavro


Viticulturist Makis Mavridis and Winemaker Angelos Iatridis began growing grapes and making wine in Greece’s northwestern Amyndeon appellation, located in the region of Macedonia, back in 1997. The estate is positioned on a plateau at about 2,000 foot elevation, and the vineyards have a desirable northwestern sun exposure. Although the climate is cold, rainy and snowy in the winter, the summers are warm and dry, so the intense winter rains and snow actually work to keep the vines nourished all summer long. The soils in this region are comprised of sandy clay and farming is eco-friendly and sustainable. The vineyards are planted to several indigenous and international varietals. Mavridis decided to plant and work with both indigenous and international varietals so that he could showcase the best of both worlds, and to create unique wines with immense amount of character and personality—and with the 2010 Xinomavro, he and Iatridis have done just that. In the state-of-the-art gravity flow winery, winemaking techniques are delicate and fairly hands-off. For the 2010 Xinomavro, the grapes are de-stemmed but not crushed, then cold soaked with skin contact before fermentation on lees for eight months. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels (medium grain, white toast) for one year; it sees an additional year in bottle before release.

The 2010 Xinomavro has a bright purple almost red core that moves to lighter purple on the rim. A bursting bouquet of aromas hovers above the glass: red fruit, a hint of ripe blackberry, leather, vanilla, clove and pepper. The palate is lush and full with round tannins, balanced acidity and gentle oak influence, with flavors that mimic the nose. This wine is will peak over the next 2-3 years, but this wine is drinking incredibly now.

Altitudes range from 200-300 meters in vineyards that feel an exchange of mountain- and sea-borne air.

Named for its historic anchor city—mythical home of Dionysus himself—the Drama wine region is in the northeastern-most corner of Macedonia, surrounded by an array of mountain ranges that provide a “rain shadow” effect much like the one felt in Alsace, France. It is a cool, dry,“continental” climate, with soils comprised mainly of sandy clay. The Aegean Sea is about 20 miles to the south.

Vineyards are in the shadow of the Arcadian Mountains, in soils of alluvial gravel and reddish clay that is high in iron. As in other areas of the world with this kind of red soil, it lends a sanguine quality to the reds. It’s an arid, but relatively cool, climate, with wide diurnal shifts in temperature

Naoussa

The Naoussa appellation is in Macedonia, in northern Greece. Vineyards are nestled in the southeastern foothills of the Vermio Mountains, far enough from the Aegean Sea to be considered a cool, “continental” climate.
