Domaine Loïs Dufouleur, Beaune, Premier Cru Clos du Roi

This Domaine was established in 1978 by Philippe and Anne-Marie Dufouleur just around the corner from the infamous Hospices de Beaune -- very close to the center. Over the last 35+ years they have acquired a total of about 12 acres of holdings mostly in Beaune. This particular vineyard, the 1er cru “Clos du Roi” is typically known for being gorgeously perfumed while somewhat earthy. Anne-Marie tends to the vines while Philippe handles all of the winemaking. The Beaune vines are a captivating sight; planted in soils primarily of limestone and clay with its best sites receiving full sun exposure although many are quite flat. The grapes are handpicked, and fermentation is traditional with up to 25 days maceration, then the wine is pressed into mostly neutral barrels (15% new) for up to 18 months. The 2010’s are some of the best reds made in the last decade. The wines are perfectly balanced across the board with beautiful fruit concentration and the 2010 is a vintage to get as much as possible of, these wines will be the highlight of your cellar in 10-15 years.

The 2010 Clos du Roi has a classic ruby red color with garnet reflections on the rim. The aromas are driven by wild fresh berries, spice and exotic flowers. The palate is dense with fruit and glycerol with juicy flavors of ripe red plums, red currants, strawberries, fresh rose petals, underbrush, wet clay and a hint of spiciness. This wine is deliciously drinkable now, but it will begin to peak in another 5-10 years or more. This is a wine to try one bottle over the next year, then forget about the rest. This wine has a lot of richness and strong flavors so pair it with a bigger dish. This Lamb stew with root vegetables is unreal with a young red burgundy with this intensity. Enjoy!

France

Bourgogne

Beaujolais

Enjoying the greatest wines of Beaujolais starts, as it usually does, with the lay of the land. In Beaujolais, 10 localities have been given their own AOC (Appellation of Controlled Origin) designation. They are: Saint Amour; Juliénas; Chénas; Moulin-à Vent; Fleurie; Chiroubles; Morgon; Régnié; Côte de Brouilly; and Brouilly.

Southwestern France

Bordeaux

Bordeaux surrounds two rivers, the Dordogne and Garonne, which intersect north of the city of Bordeaux to form the Gironde Estuary, which empties into the Atlantic Ocean. The region is at the 45th parallel (California’s Napa Valley is at the38th), with a mild, Atlantic-influenced climate enabling the maturation of late-ripening varieties.

Central France

Loire Valley

The Loire is France’s longest river (634 miles), originating in the southerly Cévennes Mountains, flowing north towards Paris, then curving westward and emptying into the Atlantic Ocean near Nantes. The Loire and its tributaries cover a huge swath of central France, with most of the wine appellations on an east-west stretch at47 degrees north (the same latitude as Burgundy).

Northeastern France

Alsace

Alsace, in Northeastern France, is one of the most geologically diverse wine regions in the world, with vineyards running from the foothills of theVosges Mountains down to the Rhine River Valley below.
