Domaine Henri Prudhon & Fils, Saint Aubin, Sur Gamay

Domaine Henri Prudhon is a small family owned estate that farms 11 hectares of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines (plus a tiny plot of Aligoté), planted on a mix of clay and limestone in the village of Saint Aubin. Henri's grandsons, Vincent and Philippe Prudhon, harvest all fruit by hand. Thereafter, all juice flows from a pneumatic press into old, neutral oak barrels where it undergoes both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation. Wines are then aged in barrel and bottle for 2-3 years before release in the US. Keep in mind that's a full year or two longer than most other producers in Saint Aubin, many of whom are releasing their 2012's right now. In short, Prudhon produces über-traditional Burgundy without makeup.” There is almost no influence of battonage (lees stirring), very little new oak, and no rushing the process. This is exactly what Burgundy purists mean when they talk about real or old school producers in the region.

This specific bottling, the 2010 Saint Aubin Blanc 1er Cru Sur Gamay, is one of my perennial favorites from the estate. Perched above the hamlet of Gamay, this small 0.7 hectare parcel of 20-, 40-, and 60 year old Chardonnay vines is planted to Southeast exposure. The wines it produces are amongst the most mineral-inflected, linear and age-worthy the domaine bottles. Visually, the wine is bright with a light goldenrod hue. On the nose it has crushed stone, lean citrus fruit, honeycomb, and a faint hint of lavender and wild mint. The palate is extraordinarily well defined with cascading layers of mineral and acid.  It is a fully realized and delicious finished product right now, but will only blossom further as it becomes more round and aromatic over the next 5 years. As Prudhon's star has risen over the last 4-5 vintages, availability of the domaine's wines has evaporated, so we don't have much to offer. I’m keeping one case for myself but please enjoy the rest!

France

Bourgogne

Beaujolais

Enjoying the greatest wines of Beaujolais starts, as it usually does, with the lay of the land. In Beaujolais, 10 localities have been given their own AOC (Appellation of Controlled Origin) designation. They are: Saint Amour; Juliénas; Chénas; Moulin-à Vent; Fleurie; Chiroubles; Morgon; Régnié; Côte de Brouilly; and Brouilly.

Southwestern France

Bordeaux

Bordeaux surrounds two rivers, the Dordogne and Garonne, which intersect north of the city of Bordeaux to form the Gironde Estuary, which empties into the Atlantic Ocean. The region is at the 45th parallel (California’s Napa Valley is at the38th), with a mild, Atlantic-influenced climate enabling the maturation of late-ripening varieties.

Central France

Loire Valley

The Loire is France’s longest river (634 miles), originating in the southerly Cévennes Mountains, flowing north towards Paris, then curving westward and emptying into the Atlantic Ocean near Nantes. The Loire and its tributaries cover a huge swath of central France, with most of the wine appellations on an east-west stretch at47 degrees north (the same latitude as Burgundy).

Northeastern France

Alsace

Alsace, in Northeastern France, is one of the most geologically diverse wine regions in the world, with vineyards running from the foothills of theVosges Mountains down to the Rhine River Valley below.
