Yes, California Zinfandel can have energy as well as concentration, as this Dry Creek Valley bottling from the excellent Quivira proves. In addition to their estate vineyards at Wine Creek Ranch, Quivira sources fruit from this bottling from the organically farmed Anderson Ranch, a prime benchland site on Lytton Springs Road. The wine aged in a mixture of new and used barrels for about 10 months, and the overall impression is one of energy and spice rather than over-extracted, syrupy fruit.
Deep garnet in color, with aromas of ripe red and blue fruits: red raspberry and cherry dominate but are complimented by both blackberry and marionberry. Classic white pepper and nutmeg flavors along with delicate green herbs reminiscent of tomato leaf. This is all supported by delicate oak tones, medium-plus acidity and balanced alcohol. Pair this with some Texas-style barbecue to really bring out its full array of spice-box aromas and flavors.
